Yes, this is beacuse it wasn't as much a background task as it was intended, but did put way too much load on the system, mainly on mysql - the process has now been interrupted so that mysql can recover. That limit as it turns out was too high already, as it allowed for too many extensive operations to be queued up that are all fighting for ressources, getting over the critical point where the system could not keep up. I put the site into maintenance mode to give it a chance to recover.
