"Bad file descriptor" messages usually appear when your pppd has died and l2tpd wants to read or write to that pppd's filedescriptor. If you use LCP echo with PPP, this can happen when pppd declares the peer dead for lack of LCP echo replies and exits.
Don't know about TNTs and l2tp troubles, sorry.
