Give Us A Fake

The Case Against John Stossel

By Kenneth Cook

On Friday, February 4, 2000, ABC News's highly rated
magazine program "20/20" broadcast a devastating report that
created an uproar in the rapidly growing, $6 billion organic
food industry. Unfortunately, according to an Environmental
Working Group (EWG) investigation, correspondent John Stossel
based his report on test results that were fabricated in one
instance and badly distorted in another. The falsified
scientific evidence undermines the truth of the entire story:

Stossel Reprimanded But Not Fired

After six months of stone-walling, ABC News confirmed
an Environmental Working Group (EWG) allegation that the
network did not conduct pesticide tests for a special 20/20
investigation by correspondent John Stossel that was harshly
critical of organic food. ABC has announced that the producer
will be suspended for a month and Stossel 'reprimanded.'

That's not enough! Stossel lied and threatened an entire
industry by disseminating false and damaging information.
He should be fired for violating the most basic ethical
standards of journalism:
