The union representing hotel and restaurant workers is sponsoring a demonstration in Garden Grove at Harbor Boulevard (at Wilken, just below Orangewood), in front of Hampton Suites Hotel at 5 p.m. this Friday (April 27). Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Local Local 681 suggests on its Web site (http://www.local681.org/Organizing/organizing.html) that: "Public land and money given to wealthy developers of non-union hotels in Garden Grove subsidizes union busting by creating unfair competition between non-union hotels that receive the subsidies and union hotels that do not. The result is lower wages and benefits throughout the community. Why not require the hotel owners to sign card-check agreements--the only way to adequately protect the right of workers to join a union--so that the entire community has an opportunity to benefit from redevelopment, not just the hotel owners." The web site provides data on how much federal monies have gone to hotel chains to "redevelop" Garden Grove.
