FYI...I'm back! dan ...................................................................... No genetically engineered (GE) crops were commercially grown before 1996. Today, much of the soy, corn, and canola crops are genetically engineered. Studies show that GE foods can pose serious threats to public health, the environment, and agriculture. Yet, there is no safety testing of GE foods in the U.S. because the FDA decided that GE foods are "substantially equivalent" to non-GE varieties in spite of broad disagreement from its own experts. The biotech industry claims that GE foods are the answer to world hunger. But no GE crop has proven a solution. On the contrary, biotech firms' increased control over crops, through patents and gene-manipulating technology, are driving small farmers into dire poverty worldwide. Thanks to the heavy lobbying by the biotech industry, the American people have been put in the dark about the explosion of GE foods; There is no mandatory labeling of GE foods in the U.S., unlike in Europe or Japan. That is, GE foods not only pose grave threats to public health, the environment, and agriculture, but they are also a sign that democracy in this country is greatly compromised by corporate greed. And where does the university community fit into this picture? Come to Academia and Action's next event: An outdoor forum on biotechnology, "Frankenfoods, Biotech, and the University." Thursday, June 7 Noon - 1:00pm At the flagpoles near Administration Building UC Irvine We have speakers from Bio Devastation 2001, the national group which is organizing a major protest at the largest conference of the Biotechnology Industry Organization in San Diego from June 22 to 27.
