Radio for the People -- Saturday August 4, 2001
This Is What Democracy Sounds Like
This is What Community Radio Looks Like
How can we initiate community responsiveness at KPFK and
Pacifica to restore the Pacifica Mission? The oldest listener-
sponsored radio stations in the country are positioned for profound
changes in the near future. A deteriorating situation, brought on by
a self-selecting and self-perpetuating Board of Directors, has led to
four lawsuits involving the governance of Pacifica Radio which are
set to go to court together in January, 2002. Whether decisions are
made by a judge or in a settlement agreement, the challenge is to
help rebuild community radio, and to make it sustainable through
some democratic process. We hope that this forum will contribute
to that effort, so that KPFK and the other Pacifica stations can
serve diverse communities, as mandated by the Pacifica Mission.
