Irvine -- A progressive group has come out strongly warning about the limitations of hate crimes legislations as a strategy for social change. The American Friends Service Committee has just issued a "Justice Visions" working paper that questions how hate crimes laws are implemented, and its class and racial implications. It also questions a tendency to rely too heavily on the state to address hate, when representatives of the state are often the very perpetrators of hate. Subversity, a KUCI public affairs program, interviews the Katherin Whitlock, author of the report: "In a Time of Broken Bones: A Call to Dialogue on Hate Violence and the Limitations of Hate Crimes Legislation." Whitlock is a longtime AFSC staff member, currently serving as special representative for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) Programs for the American Friends Service Committee, telecommuting from her home in Missoula, Montana. A longtime activist in movements for social and economic justice, Kay has been working for LGBT rights and recognition for more than 25 years. She's also the author of Bridges of Respect: Creating Respect for Lesbian and Gay Youth, the first national resource guide for adults working with queer youth, published by the AFSC in 1988. She represents AFSC on the LGBT-affirming National Religious Leadership Roundtable and is a former board member, and board co-chair of what was then the National Gay Task Force. She is also former coordinator of the National NOW Lesbian Rights Committee.
