Friends -

Please forward this to progressive groups and listservs, along with the
previous email announcing the simultaneous free-Pacifica demos on Wed.,
Sept. 12 in DC and NYC. This email gives action options for those who
support the movement but can't attend either protest. A shorter version of
this doucment is on the back of the flyer for 9/12, and can be downloaded
(along with the front) at http://wbaiaction.org/mediakit/index.html

If there are any questions, please call the Pacifica Campaign to Stop the
Takeover at 646-230-9588 or check their website at

QUICK ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TODAY TO SAVE PACIFICA:

In all calls, emails and faxes, be polite and non-abusive, but firm.

I. IF YOU CAN ONLY MAKE ONE CALL...

Call the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) headquarters in DC
(800-368-5242), where Pacifica National Board Vice Chair Ken Ford is
employed as a manager, and a leave a message for Ford at extension 8228
asking him to resign from the Pacifica Board. Also leave a message for NAHB
CEO Jerry Howard at extension 8257 asking him to call upon his employee
Ford to resign from the Pacifica Board.

Remember that NAHB donates millions each year to pro-corporate politicians
and lobbies fiercely to block environmental and anti-sprawl measures and
legislation requiring new homes to be accessible to the disabled.
Some talking points for your message to Ken Ford:

* Immediately reinstate Democracy Now! programs and staff.
* Don't pack the Board. No more self-selecting Board.
* Do the right thing and resign now, for at least 3 reasons:

1. Your term expired on June 7, 2000. (Contrary to Ford's assertion, the
by-laws do NOT state that merely being elected to the
Executive Committee allows a director to serve an additional term.)

2. You have repeatedly disrespected the Pacifica community by overseeing
union-busting, staff lockouts, censorship and race-baiting at the network.

3. By forwarding activist emails and phone messages to the FBI, you have
shown that you do not understand the historic role of the FBI as an
opponent of free expression and the right to First Amendment-protected dissent.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------
II. CALL THE PROBABLE BOARD NOMINEES

The Pacifica Board has scheduled an illegal conference call "meeting"
(illegal because it violates the open-meetings requirements under federal
law) for Sept. 19th to replace Board members who have resigned due to our
movement's massive, grassroots campaign of nonviolent pressure, and to
bolster the hijackers' razor-thin 6-5 majority over the progressive dissidents.

Call the probable nominees* and let them know that to accept the Board's
offer would seriously undermine efforts to preserve the Pacifica Radio
Network, and would immediately result in their being added as defendants in
the current lawsuits against the Board.

George Barnstone (former Board member, ACLU of Texas), 713-524-9131, fax:
713-524-9132, email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Marion Barry (former DC Mayor; Democratic Party operative) 202-562-7564
James Ferguson (DC civil rights advocate), 202-371-1091, email:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dick Gregory (comedian, activist), 323-296-1760

*Background: The last time the Board majority attempted such a maneuver, in
July (by declaring the meeting an "emergency" on one week's notice), they
were stopped by a judge in the lawsuits by listeners and dissident local &
national board members. At that time, four names were put forward as
nominees (a fifth, Susan Estrich, the longtime national Democratic Party
operative and former chair of Michael Dukakis' Presidential Campaign,
withdrew after a cascade of emails urging her to pull out). This time, the
Board is refusing to release the names until a week before the "meeting"
(i.e., around Sept. 12). So we assume the previous names are still in the
running.

III. DELUGE THE BOARD WITH EMAILS AND FAXES

Tell them:

* Immediately reinstate Democracy Now! programs and staff.
* Don't pack the Board. No more self-selecting Board.
* If you can't support a democratic board, resign now.

Subject: [EMMAS] Robert Farrell, it's Time to Face the Music

Robert Farrell, it's Time to Face the Music

In recent weeks, Pacifica Foundation director Robert Farrell has
signaled his intention to "switch sides" and support the dissident
members on the board. Robert Farrell is just as responsible for the
mess in LA and New York as Bessie Wash, Ken Ford, and John
Murdock (among others).

ROBERT FARRELL, OF SAN PEDRO CALIFORNIA, HAS SO
FAR MANAGED TO AVOID ANSWERING FOR HIS
MALFEASANCE ON THE PNB. IT'S TIME TO LET HIM KNOW
WHERE WE STAND.

Mr. Farrell was elected to the national board in October 1998, after
gaining the trust of the Local Advisory Board of KPFK, saying that
he would oppose the proposed bylaw amendments at the Pacifica
National Board (PNB) meeting in 1999. These amendments turned
the PNB into a top- down, self-perpetuating, self-selecting body,
and are currently being challenged by the California Attorney
General Farrell's stated opposition to the bylaw changes was crucial to his
election to the PNB by KPFK 's Local Advisory Board. However, he
voted in favor of the bylaw changes, despite a resolution passed by
the LAB in Los Angeles opposing them.

In light of Mr. Farrell's vote and his refusal to communicate with the
LAB, they voted to remove him from the national board in May,
2000. Neither Farrell nor the PNB recognized this action or their
right to take this action, which is granted by California Corporation
Code 5222 .

Thus, it must be understood that Mr. Farrell was recalled by his
Local Advisory Board and his continuing position on the PNB may
be illegal. Nonetheless, he continues to sit on the executive
committee.

Mr. Farrell was on the PNB executive committee during the
attempted sale and subsequent lockdown of KPFA in 1999 and
supported the actions of the directors.

Mr. Farrell was also on the executive committee during the
December 2000 'Christmas Coup' at WBAI and shares full
responsibility for the squandering of funds on a Big Brother security
system and for the firings, bannings, censorship and harassment;
and for letting Utrice Leid run amok.

BOB FARRELL HAS BEEN PUBLICLY SILENT AND THEREFORE
COMPLICIT IN KPFK MANAGEMENT'S REMOVAL OF THE
MOST PROGRESSIVE VOICES ON KPFK.

His local station, KPFK, continues to drop popular programs,
such as David Barsamian's 'Alternative Radio' at the whim of
manager, Mark Schubb, who has pre-empted Democracy Now
several times in support of the Washington management's
efforts to silence Amy Goodman.

Robert Farrell is a named defendant in the Listeners' Lawsuit
(Spooner, et al), although he was dropped from the LAB lawsuit
last winter in what proved to be a futile attempt to open a dialogue
with him.

IT IS BECAUSE OF MR. FARRELL'S BROKEN PROMISES AND
HIS ALLIANCE WITH THE CORPORATE CLIQUE WHO HAVE
BROUGHT DISASTER TO PACIFICA THAT WE DEMAND HIS
IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION.

His latest attempts to realign himself in order to stay on the Board
can not be looked at in isolation from his past performance. If he
really wants to support democracy at Pacifica, he needs to stop
hiding and pretending he doesn't know what's going on or isn't
responsible. Pacifica needs more than empty
political promises.

How you can help:

Southern California residents should write letters of 300 words or
less to the editors of Farrell's local papers. Include your signature,
address and phone numbers - the paper will only print your city.

Call him at home. His phone number is (310) 514-2052.
Be courteous but firm. Politely identify
yourself and ask him to do the right thing, to put the future of the
Pacifica Radio network first, and to resign. It is the honorable thing
to do. Every day that goes by means more damage to the network.
