IRVINE The attack on America comes closer to home as two men are detained
in the Orange County area.

Two men were detained by the FBI in Irvine suspected of having a
connection to the terrorists.

Between three and six Arabic speaking men were moving out of their

Investigation brings FBI agents to Irvine apartment complex

September 19, 2001

The Orange County Register

IRVINE -- FBI agents, following up on "numerous leads across the country,"
descended on an apartment complex Tuesday night to interview several
residents, but no one was arrested, FBI spokesman Stephen Steinhauser
said.

"There is no reason to believe the hijackers ever lived here or anyone who
ever knew them lived here," Steinhauser said. "(Agents) are just following
up on leads."

FBI officials said they were searching for someone who is not on the
government's 200-name watch list but who might have information helpful to
the investigation. Agents did not find that person.

Instead, they came across several male college students from Yemen and a
woman. The students said they attend Irvine Valley College, Chapman
University, Orange Coast College and the University of Phoenix.

Abdulla Saeed, 20, said he and several of his cousins were frisked by FBI
agents who showed three or four pictures of men and asked whether they
looked familiar. Saeed said they did not.

He said he was taken aback by the questioning and the search of his BMW,
which bore American flags.

Saeed said he plans to return to Yemen this week.

He added that family members in Yemen have been worried about his safety
after the terrorist attacks.

"My mother calls crying all the time on the phone," he said.

Steinhauser said agents are checking hundreds of similar leads in Orange
County. Immigration and Naturalization Service officers present at the
complex on Saint Vincent declined to comment.

Srisavasdi and Maria Sacchetti contributed to this report.
