work-in-progress screening of
WOMEN & WAR
A FILM BY MEENA NANJI
Meena Nanji, a Muslim American filmmaker, came home last year
with remarkable footage of Afghan women struggling against the
Taliban regime. But she didn't stop there. Placing the Taliban in
the broader context that brought them to power, Meena began to gather
the stories of witnesses to Afghanistan's manipulation as a pawn in
the global war for oil, drugs and power.
Women of Afghanistan have been caught in crossfire for the
past 22 years: first, in an invasion waged by foreign powers on their
land, and then by bloody civil war. They lost husbands, sons,
brothers and suffered untold hardships. And now, under the brutal
regime of the Taliban, they are targets of a litany of laws that
restrict all aspects of their lives.
Director Meena Nanji will appear in person to show excerpts
from WOMEN & WAR and talk about her experiences filming in
Afghanistan. She will be joined by special guests who will share
their perspectives on the situation in Afghanistan today and the
media's role in exposing this ongoing circumstance in light of recent
world events.
