Refusnik and Peace Activist to Speak
On behalf of Israeli Peace Block
As part of the University Honors and Scholars Speaker
Series, Adam Keller, a Jewish-Israeli peace and justice
activist, will speak on �Sharon�s Disengagement from
Gaza Plan: Who is He Trying to Deceive?� The free program,
open to the public, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at
7:30 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton in the Titan Student Union.
Keller is a spokesperson for Gush-Shalom, a grass-roots
movement that opposes the Israeli occupation of the West
Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. The group advocates �two
states with a single future,� and supports the creation of an
independent and sovereign Palestinian state. Keller is
arriving in North America to embark on a speaking tour
following a presentation at a U.N. conference. The program
at Cal State Fullerton will be his only appearance in Southern
California.
In addition to his work with Gush-Shalom, Keller is the
editor of The Other Israel and writes regularly for The New
Politics and other political journals. As a refusnik, he has
been jailed several times for refusing military service and
other acts of civil disobedience.

Canticle of the Stones
Canticle of the Stones tells the story of two Palestinian
lovers, now in their forties. They had barely fallen in love
nearly twenty years earlier when he was imprisoned for
political activity. She ran off to the United States to
overcome her grief. Years later, she comes back to
Jerusalem to study the Intifada's impact on Palestinian
society only to find him released from prison. Against a
backdrop of resistance and repression, they fall in love
again.
This lyrical film strives to fill the gap between fiction and
reality. Its poetic dialog is beautifully intertwined with the
harsh language of military occupation and resistance.
Canticle of the Stones is Michel Khleifi's second feature,
after his brilliant film debut, Wedding in Galilee.

about the power of citizen peacebuilding and paths
to a safer world in a time of escalating global conflict
and terrorism.
Irvine, CA - More than 2,000 people are expected
to participate in the University of California, Irvine's
first annual Peace Festival on October 9.
The festival, sponsored by the UCI Citizen Peacebuilding
Program and the School of Social Sciences, was inspired
by conversations with Jonathan Schell, author of "The Fate
of the Earth" and "The Unconquerable World: Power,
Nonviolence, and the Will of the People." The festival has
been organized with the support of a strong, enthusiastic
working group drawn from the community and other local
universities. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Physical Sciences
Plaza on Aldrich Park, the festival features world-renowned
speakers, music and dance, food and art. Local and national
organizations will host booths.
The speaker program begins at 10:00 a.m. and includes:
Jonathan Schell, author and correspondent for The Nation;
Chris Hedges, New York Times war correspondent;
Rama Vernon, global peace diplomat and Founder of the
Center for International Dialogue; Dr. Nadav Morag, Director
of the Center for Israel Studies at the University of Judaism;
and Jerusalem Women Speak tour including, Marianne Albina,
Hidaya Said Najmi and Gila Svirsky, three women from three
faiths who share a vision for peace.
Music and performances will begin at 2:00 p.m. and include:
Taiko and Arabic drumming; Vietnamese Folklorico dancers;
blue grass band, Topanga Mountain Trio; poets, Emma Rosenthal
and Miri Hunter-Harauch; singer, Cheryl Medicine Song; and
jazz/funk band, Mimensis.

We believe in non-violence both physically and in our
thoughts. We stand at the pier with a sign that says:
"Visualize World Peace. It's up to you" to get people to
tart believing that it is possible to have a world of peace -
even if it's hard for most people to even imagine it.
We will discuss peace in a spirit of dignity and respect
