ATTENTION, filmmakers and video artists of Asian descent! The 21st edition of VC FILMFEST is set for April 28 through May 5, 2005, and we are seeking submissions for the Festival, recognized by the L.A. WEEKLY as one of L.A.'s Top Five film festivals in its recent "Best of L.A." special issue. Since 1983, the Festival has showcased the best and brightest in Asian Pacific diasporic and international cinema, and has grown into a key highlight of the annual Asian Pacific Heritage Month activities in the grater Los Angeles area. So what are you waiting for? Call-for-Entry forms (PDF format) are available for download NOW at www.vconline.org (click on the link in the "Artists Opportunities" column on the right). If you want a form mailed to you, call us at (213) 680-4462 x68 and tell us you want your entry form NOW. The final deadline is Dec. 17, 2004 (postmark deadlines, by the way). So represent, and submit today. 2) The Monthly Screen for December: VC DIGITAL SLAM! REWIND at VC Dec. 9 If you missed our very successful fundraising event PAST/FORWARD last Nov. 14, here's one more chance to screen the works presented as part of VC DIGITAL SLAM! 2004. Over 40 30-second micro-movies by filmmakers Matthew Abaya, Shish Aikat, Sam Chen, Alison De La Cruz, Patricio Ginelsa, VV Dachin Hsu, Tom Huang, Tim Jieh, Sung H. Kim, Kuang Lee, Karen Lin, Robert Nakamura, John Nguyen, Ernie Pena, Jennifer Phang, Lushun Quon, Angel Velasco Shaw, Derek Shimoda, Irene Soriano, Tristan Thai, Tran T. Up to 10 emerging APA filmmakers will be invited to produce a 5-minute short film using digital cinema equipment, and premiere the works at VC FILMFEST 2005. If you're interested in participating in this year's round of ARMED WITH A CAMERA, download the application forms and guidelines at www.vconline.org, and click on the link in the "Updates" column on the left. Hurry! The deadline to submit proposals is January 10, 2005. 4) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES at VC FILMFEST 2005 It's not too early to sight up to volunteer for VC FILMFEST 2005, set for April 28 through May 5; volunteer sign-up forms will be available for download starting December 10 at VC's website, www.vconline.org. Many positions and volunteer opportunities are available, and who knows? You might just be discovered by... 5) Save the Date - January 8: Yiuwing Lam's RUPTURE (World Premiere Screening!) Visual Communications ushers in the Year of the Rooster with a premiere screening of RUPTURE, the latest effort by Yiuwing Lam, VCâs winner of the ABC New Talent Development Award. RUPTURE tells the story of a cab driver haunted by memories of a heinous crime. He finds solace in the company of a photo-shop proprietor (Marie Matiko, THE ART OF WAR, GANG OF ROSES), but both are unaware that they are being observed byâ. Gritty and styish, RUPTURE reflects the nascent genius of its young director, a former member of VCâs Armed With a Camera Fellowship program and alumni of the USC School of Cinema/Television. Little Tokyo FREE parking in City Lot 7, adjacent to the building 6) SCREENINGS AROUND TOWN Bay Area playwright and filmmaker Lane Nishikawa will present a benefit screening of his debut feature, ONLY THE BRAVE on December 19, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at the Aratani/Japan America Theatre in Los Angeles Little Tokyo. ONLY THE BRAVE is based on the 100th/442nd Regiment's rescue of the "Los Battalion" Texans of the 141st Regiment during World War II. The film is one of the largest Asian American Pacific Islander cast and crew in Hollywood history! A $50 donation is requested, with free admission for veterans; all proceeds raised will go to the film's post-production costs. Okay, this is not a film screening, but since we collaborate often with L.A.'s own FilAm ARTS, Inc., we just couldn't resist printing this: FilAm ARTS, the presenters of the Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture, will host the Closing Night Performance of the critically acclaimed play DOGEATERS on Saturday, December 11, 8 p.m. at the SIPA Performing Arts Space, 3200 W. Temple St. in Historic Filipinotown. Based on Jessica Hagedorn's bestselling novel of the same title and featuring a stellar ensemble cast of professional actors, DOGEATERS is set in The Philippines during the reign of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos. Playwright Jessica Hagedorn herself will be in attendance with the cast to answer questions after the performance, and will include a book signing with Ms. Hagedorn co-hosted by Philippine Expressions Mail Order Bookshop and a special Post Show Cast Party with late night merienda and live music. Proudly known as 'The First Home to Asian American Cinema,' the AAIFF is the nation's first festival dedicated to screening works by media artists of Asian descent and continues to be a leading showcase for Asian/Asian American films and videos. Productions for consideration include narrative, documentary, short, animation, experimental, music video, and new media. Formats: 35mm, 16mm, Beta SP, and DVD. Competitions and awards include Emerging Director Award for 1st or 2nd time director of feature-length films; ACV Screenplay Competition and Reading; Excellence in Short Filmmaking Award; and a first-ever Best Music Video Award. Miramax Films has issued a jam-packed, limited edition DVD of Kayo Hatta's 1995 debut feature PICTURE BRIDE. Set in the North Shore cane fields of 1900s Oahu, this award-winning historical drama stars Youki Kudo, Akira Takayama, Tamlyn Tomita, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and the late Toshiro Mifune. The film, written by Kayo and Mari Hatta and produced by Diane Mei Lin Mark and Lisa Onodera, is one of the very few, if not the only, motion picture to tell the story of Hawai'i's Japanese American community at the dawn of the 20th century, and deserves a prominent space in anyone's DVD collection.
