I have bad news about my friend Chris Spinks. Chris and I was supposed to get together last Wednesday and discuss financing to start-up the proposed (working title) IE Weekly. He wasn't around last Wednesday. Last night, I just heard from his sister that he died yesterday as he was crossing the tracks on Iowa and Palmyrita Avs. in Riverside. All the train deaths do not just happen in L. A. or Orange Counties as this stupid pig from San Bernardino stated to. What I am asking is what can I do now start the IE Weekly? I need help, or a direction towards that way. I wish Chris didn't go. >From the Police-State Enterprise: http://www.pe.com/localnews/riverside/stories/PE_News_Local_train02.5 74b7.html: Man on phone killed by train RIVERSIDE: Police say it is not rare for distracted pedestrians to be hit. 12:20 AM PST on Sunday, January 2, 2005 By SONJA BJELLAND and GREGOR McGAVIN / The Press-Enterprise A Grand Terrace man died Friday afternoon after being struck by a freight train while talking on his cell phone, officials said Saturday. The man was walking west on Palmyrita Avenue in Riverside at about 3:25 p.m. and waited at the tracks near Iowa Avenue for a southbound train to pass, said Sgt. Marcus Smail with the Riverside Police Department. After the train passed, the 37-year-old man proceeded to cross the tracks while talking on the phone and was struck by a northbound Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway train, witnesses told police. "Obviously, he didn't realize it was coming," Smail said by phone. The Riverside County sheriff-coroner has not yet identified the man. Smail said it is not uncommon for trains to hit distracted pedestrians. He recommended people pay close attention around trains and railroad tracks. In December 2003, a Riverside resident was killed as she walked along the tracks at Third Avenue and didn't hear the train, according to previous accounts. The Federal Railroad Administration said 20 people identified as "trespassers" were killed or injured by trains in Riverside County that year. San Bernardino police Sgt. James Voss said that every year at least a few transients die on local railroad tracks, either by accident or by suicide. In 2003, 12 people on or near railroad tracks died in San Bernardino County, according to the Railroad Administration. Beyond that, Voss said, he couldn't remember any major incidents involving trains and motorists or pedestrians since a 1996 incident in which a train jumped its tracks in the Cajon Pass, killing two people and sparking a fireball that closed nearby Interstate 15. "It's not like Orange County, where people try to beat the Metro trains and get clobbered all the time," Voss said. "We don't have that much of that, to my knowledge." ------------------------ BULL SHIT! My friend, Chris Spinks, was the man "not yet identified". In fact, the Deputy (Don't know which County.) yesterday was asking for "Cecilia". (San Bernardino Sheriff's had him arrested two months ago on unrelated 1999 DUI warrants.) The Santa Fe and Metrolink run tains all the time there. The Metrolink runs the Inland Empire-Orange County route to and from San Bernardino everyday. The Amtrak runs a train from L. A., Fullerton, and Riverside once a night. We need safe bypasses throughout the Inland Empire, and more emphasis on pedestrian safety, like what they supposed to do in L. A. We must for the safety of all residents and stop these deaths from happening.
