Emma Rosenthal Cafe Intifada -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Reportback from Afghanistan - 03/12/05 Date: Tue, 08 Mar 2005 19:42:58 -0800 From: Sonali Kolhatkar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sonali Kolhatkar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> *Dear Friends, * * As some of you know, I just returned from a ten day trip to Afghanistan with my partner, Jim Ingalls. It was an incredible trip which left us humbled and renewed our commitment to Afghanistan and Afghan women. We learned such a great deal - things that activists here know little of, and that the media is not reporting at all. I want to invite you to my first reportback from the trip. It's this weekend at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Please do make it or forward this on to other friends. Details below. * * Thanks, Sonali * *--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * * * *RAWA Supporters Southern California presents a screening of/ /**/Taliban Country/* On Saturday, March 12th 1-4pm @ Immanuel Presbyterian Church's Chichester Chapel, 3300 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles /Taliban Country/ is a documentary by Australian journalist Carmela Baranowska who spent 3 weeks embedded with US Marines. She returned in secret to the area she visited, to document what was really happening. It is a story of prisoners abused and villagers humiliated. This film has prompted official US investigations. Carmela will be present at the event to discuss her film and answer questions. For more information visit www.talibancountry.com <http://www.talibancountry.com/> *With Special Guest Sonali Kolhatkar,* Co-Director of Afghan Women's Mission and host of KPFK's/ //Uprising./ Sonali will speak on the terrible conditions still facing Afghan women, and the lack of progress on education, employment, and poverty reduction in Afghanistan, as well as the on-going problem of US-backed warlord domination. From a recent trip to Afghanistan with her colleague, Jim Ingalls, Sonali found that main-stream media coverage of Afghanistan has painted an extremely misleading portrait of Afghan women's "liberation" and the advent of democracy. During her trip she visited the capital city, Kabul, and Herat and Farah Provinces to interview Afghan journalists, lawyers, refugees and activists, as well as observe the visionary aid projects of RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. This is her first report since her trip. There will also be a slide-show.
