[EMAIL PROTECTED] "Media-Propaganda War, Basic Axis in Achieving Post-Modern Colonialism" Commentary by Hasan Roshvand: [From: Javan (Tehran) in Persian 07 March 2005 pp 1-2 English translation from FBIS via http://groups.yahoo.com/group/global-geopolitics/ Once again the wise leader of the Revolution last Thursday in a gathering of the members of the Union of Independent Islamic Associations of University Students, by emphasizing the propaganda activities of the enemy media, called the present age the age of "postmodern" colonialism. On the basis of this view, it seems that suitable to the international developments, the structure of colonialism as well as its behavior has changed, and the third millennium, regardless of its positive aspects which are very widespread and hopeful, must be called the millennium of postmodern colonialism in terms of its negative aspects. At this juncture, the government officials of global domination are trying with their deceptive rhetoric to put in place another type of colonialism to rule the world. This type of colonialism, which is carried out with the efforts of the gold-seeking and power-hungry social class to dominate the vital and financial resources of the world, has defined its final goal as the domination of all the economic, cultural, and political resources of the countries, especially in the Middle East and the Islamic world, even though on this course it is facing the greatest obstacles of the resistance and steadfastness of the nations and the true and authentic movements, because according to the wise leader of the Revolution, they know very well that "the Middle East is considered one of the basic points and great challenges of the world, and for this reason, in order to explain the postmodern colonialism which is forming in the region, the Americans, in order to implement their totally imperialistic plan for the Greater Middle East, are trying to bring to power regimes in the Middle East that have the cosmetic aspect of democracy and at the same time are 100 percent in the claws of the policies of the United States and the Western capitalist corporations." What is unfortunate is that on this rocky road of the colonialist West, some of the Middle East countries that are also prey to the same trap are helping the colonialist powers to achieve these sinister goals. Regardless of these sinister goals, what is important is by what instruments and methods the planners of this colonialism are trying to implement this sinister phenomenon in the third millennium. In understanding and identifying these instruments, the sharp vision of the leader enumerated the instrument of expansionism of this type of postmodern colonialism as the media warfare and emphasized: "The news, propaganda, cultural, and moral invasion of nations, especially the Iranian people, by the media under the control of the global and wealthy bullies is at its height." It is for this reason that political and communication sciences experts consider the characteristics of this type of colonialism to be a creeping and invisible movement. As many of those who claim to understand all the political developments of the world are unable to understand the true colonialist nature of this moment, they deny its existence totally. In other words, similar to cultural invasion that is some sort of cultural surprise attack and destruction, which sometimes is mixed with and mistaken for cultural interaction that is necessary, postmodern colonialism in some instances, such as the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, was turning back to the initial period of colonialism, that is, military occupation in its traditional form. Of course, this action was carried out in a way that not only it did not cause the sensitivity of the intellectuals and the modernists but at the same time reviving ancient empires fostered eagerness for joining such an empire among the pseudo-intellectual class. What facilitated the establishment of this kind of colonialism and with the least resistance at the same time caused the clear occupation of certain regions such as Iraq and Afghanistan and even the heinous interferences in the recent elections in Ukraine, "the Orange Revolution," and prior to that the social changes in Georgia, or the efforts to create changes in Lebanon, as the "Cedar Revolution," all can be regarded to be in line with the same postmodern colonialism which today with certain hypocritical covers, by taking advantage of media propaganda instruments, is carried out by the American dominators. These goal-oriented superficial characteristics can be enumerated as follows: 1. Having a legitimate and superficial structure with the slogan of human rights, rejection of dictatorship, and establishment of democracy and freedom, and of course one can say explicitly that the history of colonialism has been full of such slogans since the distant past, slogans which are raised with the cover of construction, progress, and development of backward nations and countries and ultimately have brought nothing but absolute dependence for them. 2. Reliance on certain layers of completely dependent forces that help domination that not only include the aristocracy and the families of the aristocratic class but a small number of intellectuals, politicians, administrators, and technocrats, a behavior which at the present time has been carried out in Lebanon with the death of Rafiq Hariri and the suspicious resignation of Omar Karami, the resigned prime minister, and once again the leaders of the faction opposing the government, including Walid Junbalat, have been brought to the social scene in order to organize the unrest under his auspices. All of this can be evaluated in this connection. The common characteristic of these affiliated groups is their intellectual and cultural devotion to the West and sometimes enjoying political and economic benefits. But the main line of this dependence has a cultural nature, which on the basis of Western values has created a new identity for such groups. These groups without an appearance of commitment to postmodern colonialism only because of being indigenous and having certain social characteristics such as intellectualism or being technocrats play the role of the dependents and devotees of colonialism in the old and new stages. 3. Reliance on the widespread global communication and active networks, the dependence of which on one pole and center of colonialist power is not easily discovered and evident. This communication network, while being at the service of its dominators, has an indigenous appearance. In this connection, as well, the media activities of some of the networks in reporting the developments and the unrest in Lebanon, which is carried out with one-sided analyses and interpretations within the strategic framework of the West, is good evidence. 4. Taking utilitarian advantage of the inclination of the people of the world toward comfort and tranquility and offering a new definition of the welfare of the citizens, a welfare the result of which is to be dissolved in the imposed policies of the great powers and forgetting national and indigenous values. Hence, it can be said that the domestic carriers of postmodern colonialism include various social forces, among them the intellectuals, politicians, administrators, and technocrats who in the previous stages (neo- and old colonialism) have been absorbed by the identity of Western culture, and they have become so dependent that they have considered being dissolved in it inevitable, have regarded the open defense of liberalism, democracy and joining the new world order and avoiding confrontation with global domination obligatory, and quite possibly consider such behavior a great service to the country and the people to achieve progress. --- End forwarded message ---
