and it will take on a whole new meaning after watching the End of Suburbia.
Learn about the issues of oil and natural gas depletion as we approach the
global peak in fossil fuel extraction. This LA Post Carbon sponsored event
features a Santa Monica Premiere showing of "The End of Suburbia: Oil
Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream" as well as related poetry
and several short bicycle and post-carbon themed videos.

The END of SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream is
a documentary that provides an alarming but honest look at the issue of the
global peak in oil production. It makes the case that peak oil (the point in
time when global oil extraction start it's decline) is imminent, and that
our industrial society which has been created using cheap fossil fuels is
completely unprepared for declining energy availability. It cleverly gets
past our defenses of the uninitiated by approaching it from the angle of the
problems with suburbia, something that most of us can relate to.
Aire Celeste Norell organized the poetry presentation. She also created an
anthology of environmental poetry, Cracked Pavement & Plastic Trees: Our
Gifts to Future Generations. It is a collection poetry that includes the
work of 18 writers (most of them So Cal based).
Los Angeles Post Carbon is an organization of outposts of the Post Carbon
Institute (www.postcarbon.org). Our industrial society is approaching the
end of the oil age, and is completely unprepared for the consequences. Our
aim is to educate the community on the issue of oil depletion and the coming
peak in global oil production, take action in our community to prepare for
the post-carbon age and have fun along the way. Our projects include
organizing educational events such as Options and Actions for a Post Carbon
Los Angeles, and working together with other local groups that are working

Cinco de Mayo downtown ride 5/8- This ride is all about fun and is being put
on by Bicycle Frontiers. Touring downtown and focusing on the awesome
architecture there this ride is sure to be an eye opener.
L.A. River Ride 5/15: This ride kicks off Bike To Work Week in Los Angeles.
Come on down and ride the River. This ride is sponsored by the LACBC and the
Kitchen will be running a pit stop at the River Center (one of the first
stops). Either ride to Long Beach and Back, or once in Long Beach jump on
the Blue Line for a free ride back to the city.

L.A.'s Bike to Work Day: 5/19: Yup, in most other cities it is understood to
be Bike to Work week, but here in Mega-car-opalis officially it is only 1
day. Welp, we're sure you already ride to work, or the market, or the
moveis, so on the 19th definitely ride to your place of business. To tell
you the truth, everyday can be Bike to Work day!!!

The Blessing of the Bicycles 5/19: The 2nd annual blessing is in conjunction
with Bike to Day in L.A. and is put on by Good Sam Hospital east of Mac
Arthur Park. 8am in front Good Sam (1225 Wilshire Blvd), there will be a
light breakfast provided, REI will be hosting a raffle, and yup, you and
your bike will be blessed!
Choppacabras Spring Thing 5/29/05: Word is this is the beginning of Bike
Summer. If ya'll have never made it out to this adventure, it is a must.
Demolition Derby, Jousting, Midget Figure 8 Race of Doom. Starts at 1pm and
these folks know how to have a good time on a bike.
Bike Summer 2005: Los Angeles!!! - So if ya'll don't know about this yet,
Bike Summer is coming to Los Angeles in 2005. Bike Summer has a 6 year
history and has been hosted in NYC, SF, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver B.C.,
Washington D.C. and Chicago. L.A. is in the planning stages and getting
ready to throw a huge month long celebration June 3-July 4. There'll be
rides, races, parties, film screenings, parties, concerts - Anything you can

Peak Oil Information:
Peak oil is the point in time when extraction of oil from the earth reaches
its highest point and then begins to decline. Most oil experts estimate
this peak will occur by 2010.
� Oil is used for transportation, electricity, heating, cooling,
pesticides, plastics, pharmaceuticals, asphalt, concrete and steel.
� On average an American consumes 3 gallons of oil per day (1.8 gallons of
which are imported).
� In the US, 10 calories of fossil-fuel energy go into every 1 calorie of
food.
� Oil extraction will be physically unable to meet global demand
� Alternative energy sources like nuclear and natural gas will fall far
short of compensating for expected shortages of oil.
The first step in preparing for an energy-reduced future is to educate
yourself.
