A NEW DAY AT WBAI-PACIFICA RADIO

YOUNG SOUTH ASIAN WOMAN TAKES REINS OF DRIVE-TIME RADICAL RADIO!

STARTS JUNE 13

Deepa Fernandes continues WBAIs progressive morning tradition

New York, NY, June 8, 2005 New Yorks Pacifica station, WBAI (99.5 FM) is
pleased to announce that Wake Up Call, the longest running independent
drive-time show in NYC, is coming to a radio near you in a revamped form
starting June 13. Wake Up Call listeners have been tuning in since 1988
for news and views that are often times heard no where else in the American
media landscape.

The revitalized three-hour program will continue to air Monday through
Friday, from 6am 9am.

Although the time and place on your radio dial will remain the same, Wake
Up Call is experiencing a true shake-up. Carrying on in the tradition of
Democracy Nows Amy Goodman as Wake Up Call hands the reins over to a fresh
new voice, newly-appointed host, international journalist Deepa
Fernandes. Many listeners know Fernandes as the former host of Pacificas
Free Speech Radio News. This 29 year old South Asian resident of Harlem [...]

Fernandes has a track record of going where few reporters venture, to bring
a truly global perspective to listeners. In 2002, she was there when the
East Timorese won their independence. In 2003, she spent a month in
Venezuela providing up-to-the-minute reporting on the oppositions
strike. Last year, she reported from Haiti as President Aristide was
forcibly removed from his country. She has reported from the Mexican
jungles, the Ecuadorean highlands, the forbidden streets of Havana and the
slums of her native India.

Fernandes reporting has also helped Pacifica listeners keep a close eye on
national politics. She brought Pacifica and its 100-plus affiliates live
coverage of the presidential elections, from the primaries, through the
debates, election night, and the State of the Union.

The progressive media community is full of praise for Fernandes shake em
up style:

Deepa will wake us up with go-get-'em grace and good smarts. It's great
news shes on board. Wake up NOW! Laura Flanders, host, Laura Flanders
Show, Air America Radio

"Deepa's fresh new voice and proven journalistic talent will bring NY
radio listeners the Wake Up Call they simply won't get any place else! She
is a seasoned, unembedded, international journalist who bridges the
diverse communities of the WBAI listening area.

--Amy Goodman, host "Democracy Now!", former co-host "Wake Up Call"

Not near a radio but in front of a computer? Stream Wake Up Call live each
morning through www.wbai.org .

WBAI listeners will be treated to reports on issues in their communities,
the nation and the world. The new show will keep a firm eye on the
corridors of power, from Washington DC to Albany to the NY City Hall while
taking the traditional call-in format and mixing it up in a new innovation
called Radio Blogging. Local independent artists, as well as foreign
artists, will perform live at the broadcast studio.

True to Pacifica Radios 50-year tradition of prize-winning investigative
journalism, the new morning show will provide additional thought-provoking
information about underlying political and economic forces behind the
headlines.

Fernandes production team will include executive producer Sharan Harper,
producer/engineer Errol Maitland, and news editor Leslie George. The team
also expects to draw from the more than 50 other radio program producers
currently at WBAI. Friday mornings is hosted by award winning and veteran
journalist Mario Murillo.
