There have been little or no pictures of funerals and the dead and wounded soldiers appearing in the US media. This is the awful reality of the war we are fighting, that the US government has attempted to black out and hide from the public. The Bush administration has officially ordered the US media not to carry pictures of the coffins or the dead soldiers. Pictures like this must be seen by the public, so that the real horrors and tragedy is never forgotten. We at C.F.T.M. feel it is our duty to do this. Over 50% of people recently polled in the US could not say how many soldiers had died in Iraq (within 500). It is because our views of the coffins returning and the funerals are being deliberately blocked and hindered. Since March 2003, a newly-enforced military regulation has forbidden taking or distributing images of caskets or body tubes containing the remains of soldiers who died overseas. The following poem is dedicated to the troops that have died and the families who must continue to live with the grief on a daily basis. I wrote it on the day the death toll hit 1500 troops. The Endless Funeral Procession Poem by Jay Shaft We would not have to remember you in past tense if not for a senseless war. It seems we all wear black and all the time now so often flags are folded as collectively we bow our heads and cry, red and white of roses takes on our mourning poses we see you fall screaming on far flung battlefield and wonder WHY? While the sun shines brightly on your gleaming polished coffin we know you have forever lost the light, and slipped so far from living comfort, mortal graces while we prepare to attend another fallen son or daughters solemn tribute, the bugles echo still from the last soldiers entombment. "As you know, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time." Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, responding to a U.S. soldier serving in Iraq who asked him why troops had to dig through scrap metal to armor vehicles (Read more Rumsfeldisms) "We can see a lot of progress being made, but it is far from over," he said. "It's going to take a lot of time, patience and dedication on the part of our soldiers away from their families." Donald Rumsfeld June 19th, 2003 Taps: Day is done, gone the sun, From the hills, from the lake, From the sky. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
