"The Potluck for Progressives" is a group
organized for the purpose of bringing together
likeminded people on a monthly basis to break
bread and talk about crucial issues affecting the
community and the world.
At each meeting, people interested in peace,
social justice, labor, and the environment gather
to exchange ideas, talk about successes, plan
actions, or just engage in a friendly discussion
with one another.
Please join us! Bring a dish to share! Enjoy
the bounty that others bring as well! The potluck
will start at 6:30 P.M. with a speaker, film, and/or
discussion to follow.
On the Agenda:

6:30 - 7:30 P.M.
Bring along your favorite dish
of food, chips, dips, or soft
drinks, and spend an hour mingling
with progressive people from all
over Orange County.
Featured Speakers:
7:30 - 8:45 P.M.
Kurt Isobe, Alexander Jabbari, and
Theresa Dang of the May 25 Legal
Defense Committee will offer insight
into the history and nature of police
and political repression, with both
historical and local perspectives.
The former will cover the pattern of
repression in the United States from
the labor movement of the late
19th century to civil rights
groups of the late 20th. The latter
will focus on repression within the
context of southern California,
including the Brown Berets of the
1970s and the current generation of
anti-racist activists. Discussion
will include the most current wave of
anti-immigration action by groups such
as Save Our State and the Minuteman
Project.
Los Angeles-based attorney B. Kwaku
Duren, representing Theresa Dang in
a pending criminal matter, will
speak about CAPA vs. GATES, et al,
a case that dealt with the
unconstitutional political surveillance
conducted by the Public Disorder
and Intelligence Division (PDID)
of the LAPD during the late 1970s
and early 1980s. The lawsuit
resulted in the disbanding of
this specialized unit, which had a
focus on "militant" political groups
who were critical of police abuse and
brutality, but also targeted elected
officials and church leaders. The lawsuit
won damages for all of the plaintiffs
(over 20 individuals and 100
organizations) who were targeted by
this Unit for infiltration and
surveillance. Duren was one of the
lead plaintiffs and will speak about
the case and its political
significance.

to help pay for facility costs, nobody will
