"Ties on a Fence: Women in Downtown
Los Angeles Speak Out" (52 mins.)
In the Los Angeles County an estimated 80,000
people are homeless on any given night, with only
about 4000 emergency beds available.
Conversations and interviews with the women who
are currently residing in downtown L.A.'s Skid Row.
Most of the 6000 women on skid row sleep outside at night.
The women punch holes in cardboard boxes and use plastic
strips to tie the cardboard to fences to give them protection.
The women who participated in this film tell their stories,
struggles and their experiences of poverty as they are
trying to navigate through the various bureaucracies of
government programs.
The Skid Row area is often stigmatized by the "normal"
society, who seldom interacts with the homeless population.
This creates a vast gap between the two societies and also
creates more difficulties for homeless people to get out of
their situation. They become trapped in a vicious cycle.

After the screening film maker, Corina Gamma,
leads the discussion, sharing insights of the women,
many who have become her friends.
Fine arts major, Corina Gamma has been artist in
residency at the Downtown Women's Center for
several years, teaching arts and crafts to women
who reside on the Skid Row area.
This film, a labor of love, brings the audience closer to
a world that is otherwise outside anyone's daily path.
We are privileged to have the film maker at this event.
