Why this is important for all of Venice???!!

The crisis at Lincoln Place is the biggest challenge to our planning
process, to principles of fair and open government, and to affordable
housing in Venice. AIMCO, the largest Real Estate Investment Trust in the
country, is evicting their tenants in the middle of the holiday season.
They engaged in closed door negotiation regarding the future of this
property. Over six hundred formerly affordable apartments are now vacant,
awaiting the bulldozers. AIMCO hopes to build up to 1400 luxury condos in
their place. If AIMCO succeeds, we all lose.

Below is a letter from Lincoln Place Tenants explaining the current
situation at Lincoln Place Apartments. It is imperative that we ask the
City Attorney, the Mayor and our Councilman, Bill Rosendahl, to do
everything in their power to prevent the evictions of these tenants. If
AIMCO Corporation gets its way and builds something new on the site, we
will be faced with a much greater density just a block east of an already
gridlocked Lincoln Blvd. We also need to demand the public be completely
involved in the process of deciding what becomes of this property. Please
read the letter below, then use the following contact information to call,
fax and email.

 From LP Tenants:

An Open Letter To The Neighborhood about Lincoln Place Apartments

In 2002, the Los Angeles City Council reluctantly approved redevelopment
plans for Lincoln Place, a large garden apartment complex that received
historic designation by the State in August of this year.
AIMCO (Apartment Investment and Management Company) would be permitted to
redevelop the property so long as certain requirementswere met. The
conditions, which were proposed by AIMCO to ensure approval, included the
commitment that
"no existing tenant would be involuntarily displaced from the site."
AIMCO is now evicting all 170 families while still moving forward with the
project.
The Lincoln Place Tenants Association (LPTA) is a non-profit organization
comprised of Tenants and members of the surrounding community seeking,
among other things, to compel the City Attorney, Rocky Delgadillo, to
enforce the city's laws and seek an injunction to protect these families.

Lincoln Place was built in 1949-51 as part of the Garden City Movement to
address the urgent need for housing at reasonable rents -- a need never
more relevant than it is now. Over the last two decades, LPTA has fought
real estate speculators' intent on demolishing our homes and impinging on
yours with thousands of new residents in high-density sixty foot tall
structures.
