Please forward widely On Saturday, December 3 an event will be held at the Southern California Library for Social Research commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners. Similar events are being held around the U.S., including in Oakland, Bellingham WA, Chicago IL, Atlanta GA and New York City, and around the world, including in the Philippines, Ireland and Palestine.
The L.A. activities will commence at noon with participation in a rally at Leimert Park (43rd & Crenshaw) to save Stanley 'Tookie' Williams, the ex-gang leader and Nobel Prize nominee facing execution. At 1:30, the day's events will continue at the Southern California Library, 6120 S. Vermont Ave. (two blocks south of Slauson) with a series of panels and workshops. Presenters include BAYAN USA and Asians for Jericho and Mumia, as well as Korean activists in a panel on Asian/Pacific Island liberation struggles focusing on political prisoners and victims of human rights violations. A second panel will include presenters from the Hands Off Assata Shakur Campaign, the Black Riders Liberation Party, and Anti-Racist Action regarding political prisoners in the U.S. Other panels will address the Middle East and Africa, including presentations by the Southern California Confederation of Iranians about anti-imperialist prisoners in Iran under both the Shah and the Khomeini dictatorship. A final panel, including representatives of the Zapatistas from Mexico, the case of the Cuban Five (imprisoned by the US for fighting terrorism), and the Puerto Rican Alliance, will elaborate on political prisoners of "Latin" American and indigenous struggles. Luncheon and dinner will be available, and while we eat there will be an action-oriented plenary and report back from the panel/workshop discussions. The event will culminate with a political-cultural event in the evening, from 6-9:00 PM, featuring Aztlan Unearthed, Urban Hawk, Filipino hip-hop, and spoken word and rap artists, as well as recorded statements for the day from a number of political prisoners, including Mumia Abu-Jamal and Marilyn Buck. A collection of statements from political prisoners in the U.S. compiled for this international day of solidarity will be available, along with a just released booklet with the latest updates regarding the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal. Sponsoring participants, including BAYAN-USA, the Confederation of Iranians, Puerto Rican Alliance, and Jericho Amnesty Coalition will have literature tables, graphic displays, and multi-media educational materials available. The purpose of the event is to educate the community about the growing struggles for liberation all around the world, including in the U.S., and the repressive incarceration against activists in those struggles, as well as to galvanize on-going action campaigns in solidarity with the prisoners and with the liberation movements and human rights struggles against imperialism from which they come.
