Community Leaders Unite to Develop
Youth Violence Prevention Strategies.

Santa Monica, Ca- Responding to a "community alert" that was issued
by the Santa Monica Police Department regarding an escalation in gang
violence, the Pico Youth & Family Center (PYFC) and the Pico
Neighborhood Association (PNA) have organized a community forum to
identify proactive solutions based on the principles of prevention.
The forum titled Preventing Youth Violence & Drug Abuse: Building a
Safer Community One Youth at a Time is scheduled for Saturday,
December 17th, 2005 at the John Adams Middle School Cafeteria from
11am to 2pm.

"Clearly this is a problem that is rooted in poverty, segregation and
the marginalization of low-income communities", stated Johnny
Ramirez, Program Manager at the PYFC. Sin! ce 1989 gun violence has
claimed the lives of 32 youth in Santa Monica's Pico Neighborhood.
Many families in the region have suffered from the neglect of this
social problem. Although there have been efforts to address the
problem, leaders in the Pico Neighborhood want to see a paradigm shift.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of punishment. Instead of
building more prisons, we need to invest in our youth and provide
culturally relevant programs. We need to look at the problem of
youth violence as a product of various social and economic factors
that breed hopelessness and self-destruction in our youth, stated
Oscar de la Torre, Executive Director of the Pico Youth & Family Center.

"We are building on the issues raised during the gang violence
awareness workshops that were organized by the City of SM and Senator
Sheila Kuehl last April. The difference this time is that we are
focusing on tangible solutions for the Pico Neighborhood and the
youth and families that reside here," stated Maria Loya, Co-chair of the PNA.

"We invite youth and parents to attend this forum to learn from those
who lived through the struggle and pain of gang violence and drug
addiction first hand, stated panelist Steven Luciano, community
mentor.! Every panelist that will speak during the forum is a
former gang member or drug addict who has made a positive
transformation happen in their lives.

To: FACTS [EMAIL PROTECTED],

The good news is: We have an initiative filed with the Attorney
General, but in order to raise funds for it, we must do a public
opinion poll. Before folks come forward with cash to back an
initiative, they want to know that it can win. Our word alone will not do!!

As some of you are aware, Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley
approached the Cochran Firm (the initiative sponsor) with the
willingness to support an initiative if certain compromises are
made. While we don't yet know the full nature of the compromises, we
do know that Cooley will not support anything that exempts burglary
from the strike list. The Cochran Firm may be willing to accept a
compromise if they feel that will enable the measure to pass. That
leaves us with the need to demonstrate (and/or find out) that the
present initiative can win.

To do that, we need you. This is an appeal to all of you to dig deep
and help us fund a poll. The poll will tell us clearly whether or
not we have a winning initiative. We will need approximately $18,000
(and that's a bargain) to do the poll. FACTS will put in the first
$3,000, but that means raising $15,000 more. Donations for the poll
can be tax-deductible, if that's an incentive.

A tax-deductible donation must be made out to the Agape Foundation
(put FACTS in the memo). We will hold all the checks until we have
reached our goal. If we fail to reach the goal, we will send you
back your donations.

Mail checks to FACTS 3982 S. Figueroa St #209 Los Angeles, CA 90037

We need to receive your donation within two weeks
in order to move forward.

We should receive Title and Summary for our initiative around the
beginning of January, so we have very little time to spare. By
January we will have to raise close to one million dollars to start
the signature gathering process. Please let me know as soon as
possible if you are able to help.
