~~~ CISPES and the Salvadoran community --- and all
who strive for social and economic justice-- mourned
the death today of the legendary leader of El
Salvador, Companero Schafik Handal. Companero Schafik
died today in San Salvador at 5:00 p.m. immediately
after returning from Bolivia where he was with
President Evo Morales. He suffered a stroke at the
airport on his arrival back in San Salvador.
Tonight we were with the Salvadoran community as
they met the local press and paid tribute to the
historic figure who inspired his people for decades,
including during the 12 year war for liberation as he
served on the FMLN's general command. {Farabundo Marti
Front for National Liberation} He was a member of the
Salvadoran Congress {National Assembly} at the time of
his death.
Some CISPES members will recall the election
delegation of several years ago when Schafik Handal
was the FMLN candidate for president. His campaign and
speeches electrified the country and he placed second
in the race after U.S. intervention and an
unscrupulous campaign by the right wing altered the
results.
Schafik was just in Venezuela, meeting with
President Hugo Chavez and received medical attention
recently from the excellent doctors in Cuba. His
visit with Evo Morales of Bolivia took place during
the last two days.
Words simply can't express the deep sense of loss
we feel and the enormous respect and affection we hold
for Companero Schafik Handal... he personified the
heroic struggle of the people of El Salvador. Schafik

Nuestro histórico Compañero y diputado Jorge Schafik
Handal ha muerto hoy a las cinco de la tarde.
Compañero Schafik Handal había viajado a La Paz,
Bolivia para la toma de posesión del recién electo
Presidente Boliviano, Evo Morales.
Después de haber permanecido por tres días en este
país suramericano, Schafik Handal sufrió un derrame
cerebral en el aeropuerto internacional de El Salvador
y murió poco después en camino al hospital.
Nuestro partido ha decretado un periodo de duelo por
tres días.
En memoria y pésame,

Today, Tuesday January, 24th our historical member and
Member of Parliament, Mr. Jorge Schafik Handal had
died.
Compañero Handal had visited Bolivia for the posession
taking of the recently elected Bolivian President Evo
Morales. After having stayed there for three days he
suffered a brainstroke when arriving in El Salvador's
international airport.
Our party has ordered a mourning period of three days.

Heute um 5:00 Uhr nachmittags verstarb unser
historisches Mitglied und Parlamentsabgeordneter,
Jorge Schafik Handal.
Compañero Handal war zur Amtseinführung des kürzlich
gewählten bolivianischen Präsidenten Evo Morales nach
La Paz, Bolivien, gereist. Bei seiner Rückkehr nach
dreitägigem Aufenthalt dort erlitt er im
internationalen Flughafen El Salvadors einen
Schlaganfall, an dessen Folgen er kurz darauf
verstarb.
Unsere Partei hat dreitägige Trauerfeierlichkeiten
veranlasst.
