REPRESSION IN SANTA CRUZ: THE GOVERNMENT IS RESPONSIBLE Tuesday, February 7, 2006 Press Conference today at 4pm at the Hotel Bauen, and mobilization to the house of Santa Cruz on Wednesday 8 at 12 noon, from the Obelisk 1. In the closing hours of yesterday, Monday 6th, police of the province of Santa Cruz detained Mario Navarro, one of the spokespersons for the big oil workers strike held during the past fifteen days in the north of that province. When the news of Navarro's detention spread, a mobilization of 1500 workers and neighbors more than 10% of the whole population of Las Heras-- marched to the police station, to demand the release of the detained worker. The provincial police received what was truly a townspeople's uprising with criminal repression: rubber and lead bullets and tear gas were shot against the mobilized town. The repressive action did not pardon councilmen or a national deputy that had made themselves present out of an interest for Navarro, and they were expelled from the police station at gunpoint by police personnel. Fifteen demonstrators were hospitalized. Some hours later, and without the people's mobilization being able to have been dislodged, Navarro had to be released. 2.-The consequences of this criminal repression including the death of a policeman-- are now attempted to be blamed on the people's mobilization and the organizations in struggle of the town of Santa Cruz. Spokespersons for the government have accused "piquetero commandos" and even "the Polo Obrero", in order to hide their own responsibility for the brutal repression ordered by the government. The government of Santa Cruz, which has jailed and even tortured social fighters over the past few years, lacks any authority with which to stand up as "spokesperson" for the events of yesterday. We demand an independent investigation of the acts of repression in Las Heras. 3- The Partido Obrero unconditionally supports the demands of the workers of Santa Cruz. At the same time we denounce the police repression and the deceitful campaign mounted by the provincial government with the complicity of the national government, which has decided to send in the gendarmería (border guards) with the aim of militarizing the region and covering up the police action mounted last night. 4- The Partido Obrero, together with other political, piquetero, human rights and student organizations, will hold a press conference today at 4pm at the Hotel Bauen, as well as a massive mobilization on Wednesday 8th, at 12 noon, from the Obelisk to the house of Santa Cruz [in the City of Buenos Aires]. En las últimas horas de ayer, lunes 6, la policía provincial de Santa Cruz detuvo a Mario Navarro, uno de los voceros de la gran huelga petrolera que se desarrolla desde hace quince días en el norte de esa provincia. Cuando se difundió la noticia de la detención de Navarro, una movilización de 1500 trabajadores y vecinos más del 10% de toda la población de Las Heras- se dirigió a la comisaría, para reclamar la libertad del trabajador detenido. La policía provincial recibió a esta verdadera pueblada con una represión criminal: balas de goma y de plomo y gases lacrimógenos se dispararon contra el pueblo movilizado. La acción represiva no perdonó a concejales y a un diputado nacional que habían concurrido a interesarse por Navarro, y que fueron expulsados de la comisaría a punta de pistola por efectivos policiales. Están hospitalizados quince manifestantes. Horas después, y sin que pudiera dispersarse la movilización popular, Navarro debió ser liberado. 2.-Las consecuencias de esta represión criminal incluyendo la muerte de un agente policial- pretenden ser endosadas, ahora, a la movilización popular y las organizaciones de lucha del pueblo de Santa Cruz. Voceros del gobierno han acusado a "comandos piqueteros" e incluso "al Polo Obrero", para encubrir su propia responsabilidad en la brutal represión ordenada por el gobierno. El gobierno de Santa Cruz, que ha encarcelado y hasta torturado a luchadores sociales en los últimos años, carece de toda autoridad para erigirse como "vocero" de los hechos del día de ayer. Exigimos una investigación independiente sobre los hechos represivos de Las Heras. 3- El Partido Obrero apoya incondicionalmente los reclamos de los trabajadores de Santa Cruz. Al mismo tiempo denuncia la represión policial y la campaña de engaño montada por el gobierno provincial con la complicidad del gobierno nacional, que ha resuelto mandar la gendarmería con el afán de militarizar la región y encubrir la acción policial montada en la noche de ayer. 4- El Partido Obrero, junto a otras organizaciones políticas, piqueteros, de derechos humanos, estudiantiles realizará una conferencia de prensa a las 16 hs. del día de hoy en el Hotel Bauen y una movilización masiva el miércoles 8 a las 12 hs. desde el Obelisco hasta de Santa Cruz.
