The LA Superior Court has ruled in favor of Ralph Horowitz and against the right of the South Central Farmers to stay on the farm. As of earlier today, the farmers are officially illegally "squatting" on the property and can be forcefully removed at any time from now on at the will of Ralph Horowitz employing the LA Sheriffs to do so. It looks like L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is busy enhancing his image nationally, has bailed out on this issue, and will not help the South Central Farmers. We can't count on him or the courts or the L.A. City Council to stop Goliath from stomping on David. If you ever had any real interest or support in the struggle of the South Central Farm and for people's autonomy, now is the time to prepare for civil disobedience in defense of this space. Please email Fernando Flores at [EMAIL PROTECTED] To obtain the proper legal documents needed to participate in the impending civil disobedience and to become a part of the phone tree that will inform the community of Horowitz/LAPD attack on the farm. Please share this information with those you know as soon as possible. ________________________________________________________________________ URGENT APPEAL TO SAVE IRAQ'S ACADEMICS. A little known aspect of the tragedy engulfing Iraq is the systematic liquidation of the country's academics. Even according to conservative estimates, over 250 educators have been assassinated, and many hundreds more have disappeared. With thousands fleeing the country in fear for their lives, not only is Iraq undergoing a major brain drain, the secular middle class - which has refused to be co-opted by the US occupation - is being decimated, with far-reaching consequences for the future of Iraq. Already on July 14, 2004, veteran correspondent Robert Fisk reported from Iraq that: "University staff suspect that there is a campaign to strip Iraq of its academics, to complete the destruction of Iraq's cultural identity which began when the American army entered Baghdad." The wave of assassinations appears non-partisan and non-sectarian, targeting women as well as men, and is countrywide. It is indiscriminate of expertise: professors of geography, history and Arabic literature as well as science are among the dead. Not one individual has been apprehended in connection with these assassinations. According to the United Nations University, some 84 per cent of Iraq's institutions of higher education have already been burnt, looted or destroyed. Iraq's educational system used to be among the best in the region; one of the country's most important assets was its well-educated people. This situation is a mirror of the occupation as a whole: a catastrophe of staggering proportions unfolding in a climate of criminal disregard. As an occupying power, and under international humanitarian law, final responsibility for protecting Iraqi citizens, including academics, lies with the United States. It is a BBC Panorama Production and, unfortunately, reveals one of Sharon's darkest legacies.... a crime against humanity. It is the story of the massacre of two Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut during his occupation of Lebanon. As the horrors of the massacres became known, 400,000 Israelis took to the streets and demanded that Sharon be fired and that an inquiry take place. The result of the inquiry was his dismissal from the Department of Defense and his becoming the political pariah he deserved to be. This event is free and is jointly sponsored by PAX and Americans Committed to Justice and Peace (ACJT) founded by Rev. John Hickox who will be our group discussion leader. Rev. Hickox has visited the camps in Beirut, in person, and talked with some of the survivors. He will be sharing their stories and his own experience with us. The documentary is about 50 minutes long; we hope you can join us. Ample street parking is available. It is also available in the church lot on the corner of Chestnut and Third as well as in the corner lot of Third and Cedar, only in those slots marked "church reserved." "This kind of violence is contrary to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad," said Dawud Walid, Michigan head of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. "These cartoons should never have been printed, but the Prophet Muhammad said that we should not reciprocate by returning evil for evil. We are to reply to evil only with good." ----- CAIR CONDEMNS IRANIAN HOLOCAUST CARTOON CONTEST (WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/8/06) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations today condemned a plan by an Iranian newspaper to solicit cartoons denying the Nazi Holocaust. Iran's Hamshahri newspaper says the contest is in reaction to the publication in Europe of cartoons mocking Islam's Prophet Muhammad. The controversy over those cartoon sparked worldwide protests. In a statement, CAIR said: "Now is the time for responsible people of all faiths to avoid inflammatory actions that are clearly designed to incite hatred. We call on Hamshahri newspaper to drop its plans to denigrate the immense suffering caused by the Nazi Holocaust and urge the Iranian government to repudiate such an insensitive proposal. "The Quran, Islam's revealed text, states: 'Goodness and evil cannot be equal. Repel (evil) with something that is better. Then you will see that he with whom you had enmity will become your close friend. And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint.' (41:34-35) "The Holocaust, like all other acts of genocide, represents one of the lowest moments in human history and should not be the subject of derogatory cartoons. One cannot demand responsible behavior from others while at the same time acting irresponsibly." Previously, CAIR and other American Muslim groups rejected the use of violence in response to the defamatory caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published in European newspapers. In reaction to the cartoon controversy, CAIR officials met with the Norwegian and Danish ambassadors to express the Muslim community's concerns about the caricatures and urged American Muslims to educate others about the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad. CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 31 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. In a statement released today, CAIR-CAN said: "The cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) published in European newspapers were offensive and insulting to Muslims around the world. The Prophet is held in the highest esteem to Muslims, and to have him - and all Muslims - slandered by these cartoons constituted an abuse of free speech and freedom of the press. "The Prophet taught Muslims to engage in dialogue and be kind and gracious to all people, which is exemplified by the reaction of Canadian Muslims who have used this controversy to participate peacefully in the current debate. "As Canadian Muslims, we stand firmly without reservation against all hateful or malicious representations of any ethnic, racial or religious group, and we denounce all acts and statements of racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. We view both the printing and reprinting of the hateful cartoons about the Prophet Muhammad and the recent initiative to print hateful cartoons about the holocaust as utterly unacceptable. "We further call on those who condemn the recent initiative to maliciously portray the Jewish community to apply the same universal moral standard to all religious communities and stand in solidarity with Muslims in opposing the cartoons of Prophet Muhammad." Political Prisoner held for 30 years by U.S. government A Hearing has been scheduled for February 13, 2006 to correct the illegal sentencing that occurred in Leonard Peltier's case. The basis for this motion is that the United States District Court lacked subject matter jurisdiction under the statutes upon which Mr. Peltier was convicted and sentenced. Leonard Peltier is a citizen of the Anishinabe and Dakota/Lakota Nations who has been unjustly imprisoned since 1976, even though government attorneys and courts acknowledge that the government withheld evidence, fabricated evidence, and coerced witnesses to fraudulently convict him. Leonard is recognized worldwide as a political prisoner and a symbol of resistance against the abuse and repression of indigenous people. To many Indigenous Peoples, Leonard Peltier is a symbol of the long history of abuse and repression they have endured. This year marks the 30th year of Leonard's imprisonment. Despite the fact that the government has admitted that the trial was a fraud, Leonard is still behind bars because the U.S. doesn't want this vocal defender of indigenous rights to be free.
