GARIFUNA COMMUNITY SETS AWARDS BANQUET
Honoring Community Activists
The Garinagu Empowerment Movement (GEM) will holds its Third
Recognition Banquet on March 31, 2006 from 7 - 11:00 p.m. in the Tuskegee
Ballroom at the Proud Bird Restaurant, 11022 Aviation Blvd. Los Angeles CA
90045. GEM is the political representative of the Garifuna community. The
Garifuna people are the largest African origin population group in Central
America and the Carribean and speak a language that is 80% Arawak Indian.
They are the descendants of shipwrecked slaves who intermarried with Caribe
Indians who remained independent until betrayed and enslaved by the English
in the 1600's.
In 2004, the City of Los Angeles proclaimed April 12 as Garifuna
Day and made that date an official city holiday for Garifuna city
employees. This year the annual Garifuna Day Street Festival will take
place on April 8 on Avalon between 41st and 43rd streets.
The awards banquet will honor Musician Jess Flores with the
Garifuna Ancestral Award. This year's Garifuna Achievement Award will be
made to Anita Martinez of the Wagiameme D&P Troupe, historian and linguist
Dr. Jorge Bermudez, entrepeneur and activist Rony Figueroa, and GEM
Co-Founder Louis D. Reyes. A Garifuna Business & Organization of the Year
award is slated to be given to Sta-tic Productions & Garifuna Cultural
Group.
Community and civic leaders receiving the Garifuna Appreciation
Award include Los Angeles City Council Member Jan Perry, "Sweet" Alice
Harris of the Parents of Watts, Consulate General Roy G. Young of Belize,
Consulate General Vivian Panting of Honduras, Francisco Rivera of the
National Central American Roundtable, and civil rights activist Jan B.
Tucker.
The banquet keynoter will be Dr. Gill Cardin, honorary Consulate
General of St. Vincent while masters of ceremony include Yvonne McFadzean
of GEM and Roland Castillo of the Gariguna Cultural Group.
Tickets are $65.00 each and RSVP's are requested by March 21st.
