Subject: [SCFs] Favela Rising Screening at the South Central Farm

Screening of Favela Rising
at the South Central Farm

What: FAVELA RISING documents a man and a
movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian
squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the
murders of his family and many of his friends,
Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns
social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most
feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms
of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he
rallies his community to counteract the violent
oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.

At the dawn of liberation, just as collective
mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson’s
grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height
of its success, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever.

When: March 4, 2006 @ 6:00pm

Where: South Central Farm on 41st and Long Beach

Why: To raise funds for the South Central Farmers

For 13 years now, a community consisting of 350
families living in the squalor of South Central
Los Angeles have been working in harmony creating
a phenomenon known as the South Central
Farm.! The South Central Farmers turned 14
acres of land, a gift from the mayor of Los
Angeles to the community in the wake of the 1992
uprising, into what is now the largest urban farm
in the nation. Three years ago, what is the the
cultural park, educational center, health center,
community center, social center, spiritual
center, safe haven and daily sustenance for this
community was sold in a backroom closed session
by the very people they elected to care for their
human rights. The fate of the largest urban farm
in the nation and well being of thousands now
lays in the idle hands of the elected officials
and power of the united community.
