A ZERO WASTE ZONE WORKING Please be mindful and aware of the appropriate place for each item. Each of the Bins will be posted with signs that specify what belongs in them. PLEASE! pack-out any items that you brought in to the event that cannot be composted or recycled. PLEASE!! DO NOT place non-compostable materials into the compost bins. This will contaminate the contents and cause the entire bin to be rejected and would have to be sent to a landfill…which is what we are working so hard to avoid. Cada uno de los botes especifican que les pertenece. POR FAVOR! Lo que usted traiga de afuera si no es compostable o reciclado, por favor lléveselo consigo. POR FAVOR! NO PONGA ningún material que no sea biodegrable o reciclable en el tanque de “compost” (convertible en abono orgánico). Esto contaminaría el material y causa que todo el bote sea rechazado y se va tener que desechar... y es lo que estamos trabajando duro para que no pase. MUCHAS GRACIAS POR COLABORAR EN HACER ESTE EVENTO CERO BASURA. ABOUT/ ACERCA de WHAT IS A ZERO WASTE EVENT? It is simply recycling, which includes composting all of the materials generated from the event. By doing this, we can significantly reduce the amount of solid waste that is harmful to the environment and therefore need to be disposed of in a landfill. This includes Styrofoam, some plastic and all other non-recyclable materials. CERO BASURA: Es simplemente la habilidad de reciclar y compostar toda la basura generada en el evento. Haciendo esto, significativamente podemos reducir el tamaño de basura sólida que daña nuestro medio ambiente y sólo podemos deshacernos de esta basura en el Basurero. Esto incluye el Styrofoam, algunos plásticos y todos los materiales que no sean reciclables. ZERO WASTE SOLUTIONS: Basically, there are two solutions- 1) always use your own plates, utensils, cloth napkins and refillable containers or 2) use products that are 100% biodegradable and compostable. All of the to-go containers, utensils and cups at this event are made of corn, sugarcane pulp and/or potatoes. The paper hot cups are lined with a bio-coating. All these items can be placed in the compost bins along with food scraps and napkins. CERO BASURA SOLUCIONES: Básicamente hay dos soluciones- 1) use nada mas vajilla que es re-usable (que no se tira), de platos, a tenedores y cucharas, servilletas de manta, y tazas. 2) Use vajilla para llevar que es solamente 100% Biogradable y Compostable. Toda la vajilla para llevar en este a evento son echas de maíz, bagazo de caña y/o papas. Las tazas para llevar café están aliñadas de un Bio-coat (Quiere decir que es natural). COMPOST: it’s a means of turning waste into a nutrient for the soil. All food scraps and biodegradable containers can be thrown into a composter and the end product can be used in your garden. COMPOSTO: ES LA BASURA QUE SE PUEDE CONVERTIR EN ABONO ORGANICO. Todos los retazos de toda clase de comida y la vajilla que es biodegrable se pueden echar al compostor y lo que se produce se puede usar en su jardín… en la tierra para sembrar. (www.afrocuba.org/HunabKu.html) Before the world was created, there was only blackness. In the middle of the blackness was a throne surrounded by shining ceiba trees. On the throne sat Hunab Ku, the god of creation. The other gods sat at his feet; there was the silent Sun god, watchful Maize god, Lizard House, and Moon goddess. But Lizard House and Moon goddess argued over who was the greatest god after Hunab Ku. Hunab Ku became tired of Lizard House and Moon goddess arguing, and said, “A great god is one who creates instead of arguing”. Hunab Ku took a jar of water from the rain gods and spat life into it; then he poured the mixture into the blackness and said, “Let my creation show its face”. As Hunab Ku spoke, the earth formed and mountains and valleys shaped themselves from the earth; flowers and trees grew. Hunab Ku drew a line in the earth with his finger and from the line sprang deer, snakes, fish, birds, and jaguars. “Let your sounds fill the air! Worship us!” called Hunab Ku. Immediately hisses, chirps, warbles, growls, cawing, and screeching filled the air. “What an awful racket!” exclaimed Hunab Ku. He swept his hand from east to west and all of the animals scattered to lakes, forests, hills, and valleys. Lizard House and Moon goddess began to argue over who was the second greatest god again. “Stop” said Hunab Ku. “Whoever can create a being that can worship us will be the second greatest god, and will have the honor of sitting at my side.” Lizard House said, “Let my creation please you,” and he scooped up some mud and gave it to Hunab Ku, “Use this.” So Hunab Ku took the mud and sculpted the likeness of a man. Then he spat life into it and set the mud-man down on the earth. When Sun god lifted the sun in the morning, the mud-man got up and walked and multiplied. But, as its head was filled with mud, it could not think. “Worship us mud people!” called Hunab Ku. But the mud-men sounded like one with his face in the ground, “Mlxd-asek-bkhe,” was all the mud-men could say. "Enough of this!” said Hunab Ku; he raised his hand and the rain gods, the Chacs, flooded the Earth and, though they tried to run, all the mud people were washed away. Only a puddle and a lump of mud remained, the puddle became a ceñote, and Maize god put the lump of mud in his pouch. Then Moon goddess pulled a catzim tree from its roots and handed it to Hunab Ku, “This is your worshiper” she said. Hunab Ku twisted the branches until the tree resembled a man. Hunab Ku spat life into the wooden man a set him down on the earth. Soon the sun rose and the wooden man walked and multiplied. The wood people cooked and hunted and built houses. “Worship us, your creators!” called Hunab Ku. The wood men stood still and blinked at the sun and said, “Kac-kac-kac TZEEEKT, kac-kac-kac TZEEEEKT” screeched the wooden men. “ These men speak like twigs, move like sticks, and think like stones. They do not worship us.” said Hunab Ku as he once more raised his hand. The Chacs again flooded the earth. Grinding stones broke some into splinters, and some tried to climb onto their houses, but the houses collapsed under them. Only a few remained, and they climbed trees and became monkeys. Maize god took the last stick and put it in his pouch with the lump of mud. “I have seen enough!” said Hunab Ku. Just as Hunab Ku raised his hand to destroy the world, Maize god cried, “Wait! The spirits of people deserve better that mud or wood. Let me plant my seeds, and you can see for yourself!” “I tire of poor creations” said Hunab Ku, “Let Lizard House and Moon goddess go to the earth and test these spirits of yours.” All of the gods except Maize god disliked going to the earth, so Lizard House and Moon goddess were very angry. Maize god clapped his hands, and from between his fingers two flowing forms, the spirits of men, appeared and floated down to where Moon goddess and Lizard House waited. “If you are worthy enough to be men, you must enter the House of the Chacs and thank them for the water that made the earth. The spirits bowed their heads and entered the House of the Chacs. After the spirits entered, the door banged shut. A terrible storm brewed inside the chamber. “If these are the spirits of leftover mud-men, then the storm will wash them away and we can leave earth.” said Moon goddess. But in the morning, the spirits came out of the House of the Chacs unscathed. “Poor spirits, you look cold.” said Lizard House, “Take these hollow sticks of fat pine to the House of Gloom and warm yourselves. But return them as you found them, as they belong to the gods.” So the spirits went to the House of Gloom and filled the sticks with fireflies for light. “Ha!” said Lizard House, “If they are the spirits of the woodmen, then they will burn up, and we can leave the earth!” But in the morning the spirits came out unharmed and gave the sticks back to Lizard House. “It seems that Maize god’s spirits have passed your tests.” said Hunab Ku. Outraged Lizard House and Moon goddess threw the spirits into a river. “FOR THIS DEED” thundered Hunab Ku, “MUD SHALL BE THRONE, AND YOU MOON GODDESS, YOU SHALL FOREVER ROAM THE NIGHT SKY”. He said to Maize god, “Sow your seeds.” So Maize god sowed his maize seeds, and when the river rose, the spirits of men would flow into the corn; and sure enough, when the river touched the seeds, a race of humans sprang up. They built houses of wood and mud, they walked, they hunted, and, best of all, the men worshiped the gods. And so, every spring, Maize god takes his place next to Hunab Ku.
