On May 4th 2006, South Korean (SK) government sent in over 7,000 riot police, 1,500 plain-clothed security personnel, and 2,000 soldiers to the villages of Daechuri to end peoples peaceful protest against U.S. base expansion in Pyeongtaek. Over 200 local farmers and activists were injured and over 400 were arrested. As part of its global military strategy, the U.S. military in SK imposed a base enlargement plan on Pyeongtaek. In return, subservient SK government utilized various coercion tactics against the farmers who wish to remain in their farmlands. The rice farmers and their families have been protesting for the past four years against the expansion of the US military base, however, on May 4th, SK military brutally attacked these farmers in a fashion similar to what they did on May 18th 1980 against the peaceful demonstrators calling for democracy.
