Dear CAMS Members and Friends,
The CAMS FUNdraiser is this Sunday!!! As I write this it is election
day, with hope for change and our future. And truly I have never felt
so strongly that it is because of grassroots activists working together
in creative, dynamic, powerful ways, we can do it. Thank you for your
support and interest in CAMS. We are growing and breaking into the
stronghold of militarism in our schools. This FUNdraiser is one of the
few opportunities for us to gather together in one space, enjoy
delicious food and music, network, raise funds for this work as well as
to CELEBRATE PEACE. Hope to see you....

ASVAB- Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
We have learned some very important information about the ASVAB which is
attached here and on our web site. The ASVAB skirts parental rights and
violates student privacy. But we have a plan, and with your help- we
can address this loophole in obtaining students' personal
information, and using the ASVAB as a potent military recruitment tool.
We have obtained the list of every school that gives the ASVAB, Career
Advisors, and the process for the information that is given. Our Adopt
A School Project Point Persons will be instrumental in addressing this.
MILITARY RECRUITMENT and SPORTS ACTIVITIES and EVENTS
One of the issues we have raised with LAUSD is how military recruiters
use sports activities to recruit. This can be as subtle as helping
coach the sports teams (football and wrestling have been popular) to
aggressive military recruiting at the Garfield-Roosevelt Classic
Football Game (where there are over 20,000 in attendance at ELAC stadium).
* There is no district policy or parameters regarding sports
events, and it therefore becomes a local school decision (Administration)..
* There were complaints (parents and teachers) about the huge
inflatable Marine figure at the last Roosevelt-Garfield Classic and the
military recruitment. I called both schools and learned that the
process involves submitting a request and $300. fee to the Classic
Committee The military recruiters ALWAYS submit a request and therefore
have recruitment access. I was told that we could also submit our
application and counter-recruit at the Football Classic. Will you join
us? Let's DEMILITARIZE THE EAST LOS ANGELES CLASSIC FOOTBALL GAME.
ACTIVITIES
-The CAMS monthly meeting and tabling at the Youth Activist Fair was
terrific. It was a hot day, but we were in the shade with community
grassroots organizations, among the trees, pineapple tamales and round
the clock music. In this environment James Lafferty gave a
Conscientious Objectors Workshop to youth from various schools such as
Jefferson High, Belmont High School, and alternative schools. We shared
I Will Not Kill information, bracelets, post cards and talked about
resisting war.
Get OUT of the ASVAB, GET OUT of JROTC, OPT OUT of
NCLB--------------------STUDENT PRIVACY!!!!
-We were honored by the Office of Americas and presented with the Lottie
Wexler Peace and Justice award last Sunday at their annual Fundraising
brunch. Their support and acknowledgement was very affirming.
-During the summer we will be working on: evaluating and adding 15 more
high schools to our Adopt A Schools Projects, promoting our Great Jobs
Great Careers Alternatives Booklet to counselors and translating it into
Spanish, developing a scholarship fund for youth, developing a Parent
Handbook on Demilitarizing Schools and Presenting Alternatives and Youth
Brochure, developing our ASVAB and Opt Out campaigns and planning for a
Conference with United Teachers Los Angeles, writing grants and
articles, presenting workshops and classroom presentations, and more.
We will be presenting a workshop on our Adopt A Schools Project at the
World Peace Forum in Vancouver Canada on Tuesday June 27th.
