Dr. Steven Miles, an advocate of socially responsible health care, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His forthcoming book, Oath Betrayed: Military Medicine and the War on Terror, stemmed from his attempt to learn why the U.S. medical staff in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay did not report or intervene to stop the abuse of prisoners for the two years preceding the public release of the Abu Ghraib photographs. Miles has assisted victims of war and torture with the American Refugee Committee and the Center for Victims of Torture. Chaplain James Yee, the only Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay, joined the Army with the intention of being able to guide Muslim prisoners and fellow Muslim officers in their faith; instead he witnessed horrific abuse and torture. Yee himself was also mistreated and discriminated against on the basis of his religion. Since being discharged, Yee has spoken out against the abuse of Muslims and the conditions in Gunatanamo. He is the author of For God and Country, which was published last November. Also appearing on the free program which will take place from 2:00 PM to 4:00, will be cultural dance performances by a traditional Indian folk dance team and the Loula Washington Dance Theatre, Youth Dance Ensemble, as well a direct testimony from a Ugandan torture survivor about her experiences and growth. The event is sponsored by Program for Torture Victims in association with Agape International, Amnesty International U.S.A., Congolese Community, Interfaith Communities United for Peace and Justice, International Criminal Court Alliance, International Rescue Committee, Muslim Public Affairs Council, National Conference for Community and Justice, New Center for Psychoanalysis, and Physicians for Social Responsibility. The annual observance in support of survivors was initiated by the United Nations in 1998. In the words of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, "This is a day on which we pay our respects to those who have endured the unimaginable. This is an occasion for the world to speak up against the unspeakable. It is long overdue that a day be dedicated to remembering and supporting the many victims and survivors of torture around the world."
