From: SF Bay View <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Our fight in San Francisco to stop the City’s eminent domain-powered ethnic
cleansing land grab will, we hope, inspire similar battles everywhere. All
over the country, the “white flight” generation and their offspring are
looking back longingly at the vibrant cities they left behind – and they
want them back. But if their money muscle succeeds in pushing us out,
they’ll be left alone in a city that’s lost its soul. Everybody will lose.

Petition drive update: Only if we win, however, can we inspire others.
While we’re thrilled to be nearly halfway to our goal of 30,000 signatures
by the Aug. 21 deadline for the Redevelopment referendum petitions, we need
many more volunteer signature gatherers and much, much more financial support.

Very few dollars have come in so far, and, sadly, we had to let the paid
signature gatherers go – many of them the very people who are the targets
of Redevelopment’s “repeopling” scam, who need the little money they were
making to keep from being homeless. Those of you who can, please send a
donation to: Defend Bayview Hunters Point, P.O. Box 470156, San Francisco
CA 94147.

SF Bay View’s survival struggle: We’re still here – thanks to many of you –
and still kicking. But the threat of extinction still looms. The wonderful,
anonymous challenge grant of $3,000 we told you about last week has been
met – hallelujah! Thank you thank you thank you to all you angels whose
sacrifices saved the Bay View once again.

But advertising income is sporadic and never sufficient, and, much as we
hate to beg, we still desperately need your help. The solution is a loan
against the plentiful equity in our property so that we can hire a good
fundraiser, someone who’s politically conscious and skilled at ad sales and
event organizing – not a common combination.

Beside the usual redlining (lenders’ refusal to lend to people of color or
of limited means and their neighborhoods), our latest obstacle is good ol’
IRS. When yet another loan application was rejected just last week, the
reason given was that IRS says we still owe a $15,000 lien from 1991 that's
now ballooned, with penalties and interest, to $700,000! Our brilliant and
fearless young attorney, Olumide Obayemi, will get it resolved if anyone
can. But meanwhile, you, our readers, are our best hope.

Hurricane Relief Information Network: Many of you have asked whether a
donation to HRIN helps save the Bay View newspaper. Yes! Bay View Editor CC
Campbell-Rock set it up and won 501(c)(3) status from IRS on the premise
that HRIN would support the Bay View’s coverage of and for Katrina
survivors. Forgotten or ignored by the major media, they continue to face a
barrage of attacks that we believe add up to nothing short of attempted
genocide. We pledge to tell the world their story and encourage and empower
them to live to fight another day.

How you can help: So your donation to save the Bay View can be made either
of two ways:
    * Directly to SF Bay View, 4917 Third St., San Francisco CA 94124, or
    * Tax deductibly to HRIN, 4917 Third St., San Francisco CA 94124, EIN
20-4234012; we’ll send you an IRS donor letter.
Either way, you’ll have our undying gratitude and that of countless
readers, including the prisoners who tell us they live for their weekly Bay
View to replenish their courage to stay strong in the struggle.

Huge kudos to Eliza Strickland and the SF Weekly: Have you seen this week’s
SF Weekly? When did one weekly newspaper give over its entire front page to
the publisher of another weekly in the same city? The amazing cover leads
to a sensational 5,015-word masterpiece of a story, “The Bayview Battler,”
by young Eliza Strickland, whose uncanny grasp of and knack at conveying
the Black experience has everyone gasping. Pick up a copy or, if you’re not
in San Francisco, go to
