When we first did the Rogues' Gallery entry for White Revolution
associate David S. Holloway, we didn't realize just how successful
he was as a photojournalist. Yeah, he's been published in Newsweek
and MSNBC, but there are a lot of prominent pics of his out there.
When we found out that he got a $20,000 grant from Getty Images last
year to explore the world of white supremacy, we thought that was a
little too successful. As we were writing the story, we found out
that his work has him hanging out with President Bush (Holloway is
the nerdy-looking one second from the right with the little card),
and now we KNOW he is too successful! A guy who was once referred to
as White Revolution's "media guy" should not be one of the White
House's media guys at the same time. It might be time to ask this
character what's up, and it will be interesting to see how antifa
and other progressives respond to this joker now that this
information is out. International A.N.S.W.E.R. take note: You have a
rally in DC this weekend. This guy is from Arlington, VA and it is
possible he might have returned from L.A. just in time to take pics
of your people.

For just over a year, Arlington-based photographer David Holloway
has been in a rather controversial spotlight. Although he is a
professional photographer whose work has been seen in national
publications such as Newsweek, and his subjects have been vast and
particularly diverse, it is his work regarding White racist groups
that has especially caught the eye of a number of antifa and
progressive activists. This attention comes after it was revealed
that he was in fact a member of one of those White racist groups,
Billy Roper's White Revolution. It is not certain how long Holloway
has been working with Roper, but he has been referred to as the
group's "media guy" and at various times he has given money to Roper
for travel expenses as well as for bail money for one of their
members. Those in the industry however, have not seen this side of
Holloway. They simply look at his photojournalism on white
supremacists as part of his job, and just a particular subject he is
interested in.

Still despite the concern, not much noise has been made about
Holloway, who has some of his work on his website
www.onethousandwords.net. That may change since it has been learned
that last year Getty Images awarded him $20,000 to continue
exploring the issue of white racist groups. It has also been learned
that he is a member of the White House News Photographers
Association (WHNPA) and he has had won awards in that capacity as
well, even posing in an Oval Office photo with the President.

On Feb. 23, 2005, it was announced that Holloway and London-based
Italian photographer Dario Mitidieri, who was exploring the issue of
teenage pregnancy in his photographs, were the first two recipients
of Getty Images' Grants for Editorial Photography, In addition to
the monetary award, they will provide winners with logistical and
administrative support from Getty who will be market their images on
their website for one year. Since then five others have also been
awarded this grant.

Holloway's photographs can be found at the Getty Images website, and
they feature pictures of some well-known figures in the neo-Nazi
scene. One is of White Revolution leader Billy Roper and his wife
Melissa. Another is of what looks to be an Aryan Nations prayer
session with Aryan Nations leaders Dick Butler and Ray Redfeairn,
both now deceased, along with Aryan Nations Security head Rick
Spring and Aryan Nations New Jersey Chapter leader James Mazzone,
who is currently in jail for drug trafficking. Others included a
Klan initiation ceremony and various candid shots of Neo-Nazis.

According to Peggy Willett at Getty Images, the fact that Holloway
was in fact a member of White Revolution was not even considered,
and in fact it possibly wasn't known. She said that the judges are a
panel of professional photojournalists and industry experts who are
presented with the applicants anonymously. "They select the
project's based on their social and cultural significance, as well
as looking at a selection of the applicant's images to see if they
have the technical skills obviously to report on the story" she
said.

Willett also notes that Getty was simply interested in the subject
that Holloway wanted to address. She said that Getty is particularly
interested in undertold stories, and the issue of neo-Nazism in
America was one that met this end. "Clearly Mr. Holloway is covering
the issue of white supremacy and white racist groups because he
thinks it's something that people need to know more about."

Holloway, who grew up in rural Arkansas - where White Revolution is
based - and has been documenting racial issues for a number of
years, said he was going to use the $20,000 grant to continue work
on his project documenting white supremacists. According to Getty
Images, he hopes to provoke a national debate on race, and says the
Getty grant will enable him "to demonstrate how cultural difference
is taught from a racist perspective."

In 2004, he won a second place award from the WHNPA for his portrait
of famed anthropologist Jane Goodall. The WHNPA awarded him second
place again the following year for his photo "Protester Kiss," taken
of a man kissing his girlfriend as they were both handcuffed during
the final night of protests at the Republican National Convention.
This year, he got a first place nod for a picture of Aryan Nations
member Scott Marquart shooting his wife, Dani with a pellet rifle
outside their home in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dani is a member of
White Revolution and she and her husband have been in numerous
pictures taken by Holloway. This picture got him the opportunity to
have his picture taken, along with other winners, with the President
of the United States in the Oval Office.

One controversial situation with Holloway has been noted. On Dec. 10
in Toledo Ohio, in an effort to prevent another riot in the city
that took place after an aborted rally put on by the National
Socialist Movement (NSM) that October, began arresting anyone who
came to close to the staging area of the NSM in their second attempt
to rally. This included members of the press and especially
photographers. Holloway was not only left to do his job, he easily
managed to get inside the NSM staging area. Earlier on his website
Overthrow.com, then-NSM Spokesperson Bill White noted that they were
going to have their own media person with them. Photographer Isis
detailed this in her blog, and was particularly angry about the
preferential treatment. "It weighs in very unfairly that while
Holloway clicked his shutter away, protected by affiliation and
membership with the White Nationalists, other more objective
and "racialist detached" members of the press were harassed,
arrested, shoved around by cops on horses and basically blocked from
properly recording the event for the general public," she wrote.
Other blog entries around the internet also stated creating a buzz
about Holloway, especially after he was seen at the June 6
demontration outside the White House sponsored by the DC Anti-War
Network.

Reportedly, Holloway may currently be on the road. One website that
apparently tracks where he is posting from listed his current
location as Los Angeles.
