The End Corporate Rule Group at the Orange Coast Unitarian
Universalist Church Presents a Free Screening of the newly released
Documentary Film
Sir! No Sir!
This award-winning documentary reveals the untold story of the GI
movement to end the war in Vietnam. This is the story of one of the
most vibrant and widespread upheavals of the 1960s - one that had
a profound impact on American Society, yet has been virtually
obliterated from the collective memory of that time. This documentary
combines fast-paced archival footage with thoughtful interviews,
"perfectly timed with new doubts about the Iraq War" (Variety).
By the Pentagon's own figures, 503,926 "incidents of desertion"
occurred between 1966 and 1971. Officers were being "fragged" by
their own troops at an alarming rate. By 1971, entire units were
refusing to go into battle in unprecedented numbers. Soldiers around
the world published 200 underground newspapers. Stockades and
federal prisons were filling up with soldiers jailed for their opposition
to the war and the military. How and why was the history of the GI
movement replaced with the myth of the spat-upon-veteran?

Peace march to Rohrabacher's office Wednesday August 30th.
A march and other activities from the Huntington Beach Pier to
Congressman Dana Rohrabacher's office are being planned.
This march will be held when Congressional representatives
are back home in their offices and is part of the National
organization of Military Families Speak Out Operation House Call
campaign, which began in Washington DC. last month. Local
chapters and supporters are planning events throughout the
country to highlight the large number of casualties since Congress
voted to stay the course and their responsibility for doing so.
MFSO-OC is targeting Rohrabacher. All members of the
peace community are invited . Save the date. A flyer with
details is forthcoming.

The house selection for the video this month will be "Sir! No Sir!":
the suppressed story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam.
This movement has largly been erased from our history. The film
suggests the Vietnam war was ended because the American soldier,
in mass, refused to fight. This mass mutiny was supported by a number
of coffee houses located outside military bases where sodiers could come
and get underground newspapers and sit and talk with veterans that told
their stories about what war in Vietnam was really like. This is a
powerful
film.
Ron Wilkinson of Monsters and Critics said, "A film that threatens
the war movement with every showing, the Bush administration should
outlaw it from all theatres within fifty miles of an armed forces
recruiting
station."
New York Daily News: "This is powerful stuff, offering us not only a
new lok at the past, but unavoidable relevant insights into the present."
This will be a backyard/outdoor showing so bring a beach chair if you
have one and dress warmly...lately it has been chilly in the evening.
Doors will open at 7pm and it gets dark enough to show the film around
7:30. This will be the first video night at our new location. We're
excited! Tabling for you group is welcomed and invited. Parking is
restricted on our street, you must have a permint, so it is a minute walk
from the vacant K-mart parking lot across the street, or you can park
on our street past the permint required area. We will have some
refreshments and welcome anything folks want to share. We hop
you all can come.

We have decided to move our serving day and free
Market to Saturday, as opposed to Sunday. San
Clemente Food Not Bombs, will be serving in Max Berg
Park at 3pm every Saturday.
Some new projects within San Clemente Food Not
Bombs have been:
providing clothes, house supplies, appliances, and anything
else donated that would be of use to the lower income families
which we work with in our community.
Books Not Bombs. BNB collects and redistrubutes reading
material, preferably progressive and historical writings,
and offers them to the community at no cost. BNB looks to
collect, among others, childrens books to be distrubuted to
Las Palmas Elememtary School, located across from the
park which SCFNB serves at.
Finally, SCFNB has begun a small collection of youth working
to send items and love into the prison industrial complex.

"Peace vigil every Sunday night at the foot of the
Huntington Beach Pier, 7-8 pm
It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace.
We are a very small group of people who believe that
this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once
enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the
pier every Sunday night with a sign that says:
"Visualize World Peace. It's up to you".
We also believe in non-violence both physically
and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and
non-violence with anyone who is rational and
smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil
in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try
to build bridges with those who don't share our
philosophy.
Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our
banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)
