LA CAN and downtown community residents need your support! LAPD's Central Division is completely out of control and we must put an end to their criminal behavior. Friday, December 22, 2006 10:00 AM SHARP LAPD Central Division, 6th and Wall Streets, Downtown LA Join residents from downtown and across Los Angeles in calling for an end to the lawlessness of police and the racist criminalization of an entire community. For example, in the past two weeks... 1. A Central Division officer was arrested for beating a teenager INSIDE CENTRAL DIVISION WHILE HE WAS HANDCUFFED TO A CHAIR. 2. A WOMAN WAS DRAGGED FROM HER HOME, pulled out as she gave the officers her ID through a small space in the door, bruised from head to toe, brought to Central Division and NEVER CHARGED WITH ANYTHING. Instead, they placed her in County Hospital against her will on a 72-hour hold because she had supposedly threatened someone with a knife. She was not charged for this offense - but was cuffed, brought to the police station, and detained. She was released, prior to the 72 hours, after hospital staff realized she did not have any mental health issues and was not a threat to anyone. 3. A man was brutalized while standing near a public park, across the street from his home, doing absolutely nothing illegal. He was slammed against a wall, kneed in the back and back, and twisted into handcuffs. LAPD THEN WALKED HIM DOWN THE STREET FOUR BLOCKS TO THE POLICE STATION, CUFFED AND HIS ARMS HELD HIGH BEHIND HIS BACK and was held at Central Division. He was told he would be held for a few hours on drunk and disorderly conduct and was transported to Parker Center. The officer at Parker Center told the Central Division officers he would not book this man under these charges and they transported him back to Central Division. He was held there another hour before officers informed him that "they had bad news - they had to let him go." He was treated at a VA Hospital for injuries sustained during the assault and one arm is currently in a sling. During this same time, LAPD Central Division officers continue to cuff and detain people for no reason, stop people for parole/probation checks and searches who aren't even on parole or probation, steal people's property under the guise of street cleaning, leave people's property on the street when they are arrested to be stolen, and a multitude of other illegal activities. They have conducted over 1,500 "warrant checks" in the past three months, detaining and cuffing people in the street as a means of psychological warfare, finding only 200 people with outstanding warrants. In August, we marched on Central Division to put an end to their racist actions - many of you joined us. We need MORE people to show that all of Los Angeles cares about what is happening downtown!! Join us! Call LA CAN at 213-228-0024 for more details.
