Call for Posters-Subvertisements Extended deadline February 2, 2007 <http://politicalgraphics.org/pdf/Call%20for%20Logo%20Posters.pdf> March 19 April 21, 2007 California State University Northridge Art Galleries 18111 Nordhoff Street Northridge, CA 91330 - 8299 www.csun.edu/artgalleries (818) 677-2156 SubvertisementsUsing Ads & Logos for Protest Your Sneakers, your iPod or Your Life. Branding has never been hotter. Adults and children alike are targeted by ads and pressured by peers to buy the right clothes, the right toys and the right cars, and often pay extra for the privilege of being a walking advertisement. Many items have become worth killing for just for the logo. Throughout the world, political artists are taking advantage of highly marketed advertising campaigns to bring diverse social causes to the forefront. An iPod ad becomes an image of torture in Abu Ghraib prison. Insecticide Raid becomes anti-immigrant spray Fraid. Tony the Tiger becomes Frankentony. Whether they are protesting the Viet Nam or Iraq wars, drawing our attention to sweatshop labor, or opposing the use of pesticides and genetically modified foods, these posters provide an alternative view of reality. This exhibition is funded in part by the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles CALL FOR POSTERS!!! The Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG) is asking artists, organizations, and activists for poster submissions for our upcoming exhibition entitled SubvertisementsApproaching Logos for Protest. This exhibition will feature posters that use well-known logos and advertising imagery to tackle ongoing struggles for social change at home and abroad. CSPGs newest exhibition is scheduled to premiere March 2007 at the California State University, Northridges Art Galleries. With over 32,000 expected audience members, your posters will impact and educate a large population on the important issues your organization promotes. CSPG encourages you to use this exhibition as an organizing tool to forward your mission and broaden your constituency. Branding has never been more pervasive. Adults and children alike are pressured to buy the latest products in the market. Consumption has become the foundation for cultural identity. Urban and rural landscapes are saturated with advertisements on billboards, in publications, on television, and even in bathroom stalls. By combining familiar images with social critique, Subvertisements will use satire to draw attention to current issues and/or to expose illegal and inhumane infractions committed by prominent corporations. This exhibition will challenge viewers to rethink their roles as consumers and citizens, and inspire them to become active participants for social change. By donating your posters, they will become a part of CSPGs unique archive that will be accessible to the general public and researchers for years to come. Criteria for posters CSPG collects: 1. It must be produced in multiples such as silkscreen, offset, stencil, litho, digital output etc. CSPG maintains the largest archive of post-World War II political posters in the U.S., with more than 50,000 domestic and international posters in our collection. Through traveling exhibitions, online photo albums, internships, and volunteer opportunities, CSPG is reclaiming the power of art to inspire people to action. 2.The poster must have overt political content. The enormous disparity between the eloquent promise of the Statue of Liberty and the recent attacks against immigrants is enormous. Immigration to the United States varies broadlywho comes, why, from where, and when is emphasized in posters that speak to ongoing efforts to make immigrants reality closer to Emma Lazarus's aspiration. Yet from the Irish and Chinese in the nineteenth century to the Mexicans and Middle Easterners of the twenty-first centuries, discrimination based on race, class, language, and culture has unfortunately been consistent. Whether the reason for migration is to escape war, seek asylum from persecution, or pursue better economic opportunities, leaving ones family, friends, and home is never easy, and the posters in this exhibition present the human side of this wrenching experience.
