Please take a few moments to look at the following events coming up this month. We hope you will participate and pass on this notice to others. TAKE ACTION TO STOP THE TRANQUILLON RIDGE PROJECT! (JAN. 16) UNMET TRANSIT NEEDS HEARING IN SANTA MARIA (JAN. 18) 34th ANNIVERSARY OF ROE VS. WADE, CANDLELIGHT VIGIL IN SANTA MARIA (JAN. 22) NORTH SANTA BARBARA COUNTY WOMEN'S POLITICAL COMMITTEE ANNUAL MEETING / TRIBUTE TO MURIEL ROBINSON, NORTH SANTA BARBARA COUNTY WOMEN'S POLITICAL COMMITTEE (JAN. 27) Here are the details: 1. TAKE ACTION TO STOP THE TRANQUILLON RIDGE PROJECT! WHAT: The County of SB has released a Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the proposed Tranquillon Ridge Project. This project, which was denied in 2002, would allow Plains Exploration and Production Company (PXP) to "slant drill" from Platform Irene into a new State lease offshore Pt. Arguello. The project would extend the life of Platform Irene and the offshore pipelines by 30 years. The area to be leased is currently part of the California Coastal Sanctuary. Concerns about the project include the request for a new lease, as well as the extended life of the existing platform, pipelines, and onshore oil and gas processing facility. One of these pipelines leaked over 6,000 gallons of oil in 1997, killing hundreds of seabirds and spoiling 40 miles of pristine coastline. By extending the life of the existing operations, the environment and surrounding community will be exposed to increased risks of pollution and oil spills. The DEIR is available at the County Energy Division website at: http://www.countyofsb.org/energy/projects/PlainsPedernales.asp You can also request a hard copy by contacting the Energy Division at 805-568-2040 or view a copy at the Lompoc and Santa Barbara public libraries. WHEN: Comment deadline is January 16, 2007, 5:00 pm WHERE: Submit comments to: Planning and Development, Energy Division, 123 E. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 2. SBCAG PUBLIC HEARING ON UNMET TRANSIT NEEDS WHAT: The Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) is holding a hearing to receive public comments on unmet transit needs in Santa Barbara County. Written comments must be received by February 13, 2007. Mail comments to SBCAG at 260 North San Antonio Road, Suite B, Santa Barbara, CA 93110. Comments may also be emailed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] An Unmet Transit Needs on-line comment form is available at www.sbcag.org. WHEN: Thursday, January 18, 10:00 am WHERE: Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, 511 East Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria WHY: Census data indicate that the transit-dependent population is substantially larger in North County. Nevertheless, 9 out of 10 transit trips TAKE PLACE ON THE SOUTH COAST. The South Coast is served by the Metropolitan Transit District (MTD), an independent transit agency that receives the money and uses it to provide transit services. There is no independent transit agency in North County. The municipalities control transit "agencies" (SMAT in Santa Maria, COLT in Lompoc, SVTA in Santa Ynez Valley) that contract out services. The cities of Santa Maria and Lompoc, and the unincorporated areas of Northern Santa Barbara County, allocate over half of their TDA funds to road maintenance after SBCAG makes the finding that there are no "unmet transit needs that are reasonable to meet". The main purpose of the "Unmet Transit Needs" hearing on January 18 is to hear from transit users specific requests for transit services. Some unmet needs that community members could advocate for include: Farmworkers' transportation: Encourage SBCAG to implement the van pool program for farmworkers in the Santa Maria Valley, which in 2005. The County allocated $50K, and the City of Santa Maria $100K to this program. This money is sitting in a fund, waiting to be used. In addition, the State has recently approved a $20 million program for farm workers' transportation. This money is available now, starting January 1, 2007 until June 30 2009. The County of Santa Barbara will apply for funds to PLAN for the program. Extension of "The Breeze": "The Breeze" is a week-day commute bus service linking Lompoc-VAFB-Santa Maria. Expansion of The Breeze is listed in the North County Transit Plan recently adopted by SBCAG. The first expansion of the system will be an extension to Buellton and Solvang. The larger plan calls for another extension from Buellton to Los Alamos and Santa Maria via Highway 101, thus completing "the triangle". Buellton is envisioned as the hub and transfer point to the South Coast. MTD currently has a "Valley Express" from Santa Barbara to Buellton. 3. 34th ANNIVERSARY OF ROE VS. WADE, CANDLELIGHT VIGIL WHEN: MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 6-7 PM WHERE: PLANNED PARENTHOOD, 415 EAST CHAPEL, SANTA MARIA Please bring a candle and a friend. 4.
