Add another vigil to this Saturday's mobilization. From: Steve Fine <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2007 15:11:49 -0800 Subject: [Neighborsteve] Friday Vigil - Sat March & Rally Downtown LA - More
Neighbors for Peace and Justice, San Fernando Valley This is a CRITICAL HISTORICAL MOMENT in our nation's history, and the world. The people want the war ended. Bush/Cheney are digging in, and may even be planning to widen the conflict in the Middle East by engineering a military response to a non-existent threat from Iran. (If you think that's unlikely, then you don't remember how unlikely it was that the administration would really do something as overthetop as invade Iraq. Remember? All the saber rattling was just to win votes in the '02 congressional elections. And where would the money come from?) MoveOn and other national organizations are raising funds (see below) to mount a sustained campaign to pressure the administration to yield to the will of the voters and withdraw troops from Iraq. Here in LA and in Washington D.C, and many other cities around the county large scale marches and rallies are being held. In LA a broad based coalition of peace and community groups has formed. The downtown rally at Democratic Party Headquarters is to keep the pressure on the leadership in congress to bring the troops home/stop the funding. We begin this Friday at the local level, the peace corner, where we've been holding signs demanding these actions for years. Come join us this Friday! If you can't make it to Washington, state why Saturday's march speaks for you. 2) Call radio talk shows to discuss the issues and mention the Washington march, or a demonstration in or near your town. 3) Contact media outlets in your town to encourage them to cover the massive demonstration in Washington on Saturday. ---------------- MoveOn members: ($$$ pitch from MoveOn edited a bit; check the links for the full deal) Last night, President Bush told Congress to give his escalation plan a chance. Congress wasn't buying it: there was little applause. In his powerful rebuttal Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) called for an exit, adding, "The majority of the nation no longer supports the way this war is being fought; nor does the majority of our military, nor does the majority of Congress." The question is, will opponents of the war have the votes to actually block the president? Together, we can make sure they do. Thats why we've launched a huge new plan to get Congress to stop the escalation and bring the troops home. It'll be a major, ongoing campaign. And to ensure we have the resources to keep the pressure on, we're asking folks to contribute $20 a month. Since yesterday, 1,548 people have signed on! But we still need 2,452 more contributors. Can you chip in $20 a month? It's easywe bill your credit card each month, and you can cancel any time. Click here: https://pol.moveon.org/donate/monthly_iraq.html? id= 9770-1816634-yzBMteBfQyj.ztIrJQ_NnA&t= 3 We're planning a sustained campaign with the intensity normally reserved for the final month before an election. We'll have staff organizers around the country. We'll form local rapid response teams, using our successful Operation Democracy program as a backbone. We'll use petition deliveries, call-in days, town hall meetings, rallies and vigils to press Congress for an exit. Together, we can stop the war. Together, we will stop it. Thank you.
