I am writing to express my support for the Fair Employment Resolution, and to urge you to support the substitute Motion put forth by Supervisor Molina on January 23rd, 2007. I am concerned about the thousands of people returning from prisons and jails to our communities each year. I believe that access to housing, drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, and perhaps most importantly, living wage employment is critical to successful reentry. I believe that people with prior convictions should not continue to be punished after having served their sentences, and that the opportunity for a fresh start is in all of our best interest, and the interest of public safety. Los Angeles County should take the lead in reducing barriers to employment faced by people who have prior convictions. Modifying the County’s own application process by asking for conviction history later in the hiring process is a simple, no cost way to make the County’s process more open and fair, and to send a strong message to other municipalities, as well as the private sector, that L.A. County supports the successful reintegration of people returning from prisons and jails. I support the effort to reposition the question about prior convictions on applications for employment with the County, and urge you pass the Fair Employment Resolution.
