Jesse [Jackson] and I going to talk about this
NCAA thing on his radio show Sunday -1April-
morning for 2 hours (8 to 10). His site is
keephopealiveradio.com (you can hear it stream
from there) and his show is in a few cities. I
am not sure which ones. Fortunately, he sees
what is going on with this NCAA thing and wants to help.
As a Finance Professor, I have analyzed the NCAA
extensively in various venues, in hopes of
stimulating a reassessment of their business
model. What many do not understand is that the
NCAA's ability to operate as a cartel essentially
traps players to the point that they have few
options outside of college sports. There is
nothing wrong with making money, I just have a
problem when money is being made but not shared
with the families of those individuals providing
the labor. A football coach can't earn his $1M
bonus for winning a bowl game without having 70
mothers willing to allow their sons to risk
paralysis in order to win that game. I
personally feel that these mothers deserve some
of the riches being earned from the
game. Scholarships are valuable, but coaches are
not paid with scholarships....they are paid with money.
What is more interesting is that collegiate
athletics represents an aggregate wealth
extraction from the black community in the
billions. This is not a pure race issue, but one
cannot ignore the racial implications of this system. Additionally,
1) Most of the players dominating college basketball and football are black
2) The NCAA pays for the families of coaches and
administrators (mostly white) to attend the
tournament and even offers them money for food
and lodging, but provides nothing for the
parents. In fact, at Ohio State, some of the
black players tried to hold a fund raiser so that
their parents could go to the championship game
to watch their sons play, and the NCAA
investigated the event, stating that it was
illegal for them to earn revenue from their son's
images in any way. At the same time, the
university used their sons images to earn money for themselves.
3) The NCAA has a $6B TV rights deal with CBS
sports just for the rights to air the NCAA
tournament. When valued as a professional sports
franchise, the NCAA Final Four has a value that
exceeds the Super Bowl and the World Series.
4) Half of the black players come from
poverty, yet dozens of NCAA coaches earn $3 -
$4M per year from predominantly black talent.
5) Many players at big time athletics programs
are told to change their major and miss classes
in order to compete in sporting events. But
coaches are rarely fired for low graduation
rates. They are usually fired for low winning percentages.
6) Many of the universities earning vast wealth
from black athletes do not hire black coaches or
black professors or admit very many black students.
