These lists can't escape reality completely so I thought I would mention Paris Hilton
A friend is interested in how dangerously adapt the Media has become in manipulating a temporary part of the public consciousness with these stories ( once only in the Gossip sheets) of sex, violence, celebrity and young starlets. Keith Olberman pointed out last night on MSNBC only broke away with a split screen from the Paris coverage to announce the General Pace was fired from the Joint Chief of Staff And how crass and vile they are in destroying the lives of these, (especially the younger ones) of the people they "cover". These young girls, like Paris, are doing what a lot of young girls and guys are doing, going out to parties and clubs and drinking a lot. They don't seem to be hurting anyone. And from most accounts, a DUI and driving without a license only results in maybe a day in jail, certainly not 45. It also shows how unrewarding and unsatisfying the lives of many young people have become, where they would rather be blotto or engage in stupid live threatening activities. In the Sixties the campus radical political activities practically destroy the fraternity and sorority life by presenting real ways to make ones live meaningful. The Powers that Be know that and ever since have been engaged in massive efforts to thwart that from happening again The very deliberately turned, "having the freedom to love who you want and how you want, having the ability to raise you consciousness, making and listening to relevant music, wearing the kind of clothes you want and building a progressive community" to sex, drugs, rock and roll, trendy consumerism and partying. But today we also have the examples of the many thousands of young folk militantly demonstrating at the G8 Summit in Germany So the progressive movements have to work harder and better at presenting to students and young people (in a fairly hip way) more meaningful ways to live their lives and avenues to turn our societies away from the terribly destructive, inhumane and oppressive mires they are sinking into. And that to work on these issues is not a hobby, life style or temporary activity but a life long commitment to build a just, caring, loving, democratic world we can all live in.
