Dear Friend, I'd like to invite you to a very special event: the 70th birthday celebration of one of LA's best and brightest activists - Don White. The event will benefit two organizations that Don has served for many years, the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) and the Office of the Americas (OOA). As you all know, Don is a Los Angeles community leader who has given his life to progressive struggles. It just so happens that he's 70 years young this spring and celebrating nearly five decades as an organizer. Don's steadfast loyalty, no matter how tough the going gets, has been an inspiration to LA activists young and old and typifies the determination that has kept social justice work moving forward even in the darkest days of Reagan and the Bushes. Don't just take my word for it! In 2005, thousands of Salvadorans gathered to celebrate 25 years of revolutionary struggle to free their country from military dictatorship, corporate control and US domination. The Salvadoran people and the FMLN, in turn, honored a few special organizations and individuals. You'll recognize some of the names- Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, the Sandinistas of Nicaragua. And right beside those leaders, the ones who are molding Latin America into a force capable of throwing off centuries of subservience to the colossus of the North, stood... Don White! Don and I first met in Los Angeles during an upsurge by literally hundreds of thousands of people opposed to Reagan's criminal funding of the brutal regimes in Central America. We have marched together often and Don always seems to be at the head of the procession. He has drawn inspiration from the courage and creativity of the people of Latin America, and we, in turn, have drawn inspiration from him. Now, after many difficult years, the tide is turning in Latin America. Don's work as an organizer for CISPES and as a board member for OOA has helped make that change possible, while also inspiring many young people to take action. I know that Don's solidarity and tireless work on behalf of social change have been invaluable, and I'm proud to support him and the organizations that he represents. Join CISPES, the Office of Americas, and Don at this historic celebration and help advance the solidarity movement, while mobilizing to raise the resources for these wonderful organizations to continue taking on their essential role in the struggle. Stay on La Cienega for approx. 2 miles. Go past Rodeo Road (traffic light) and Carls Jr. Turn right on the first road after Rodeo which is Wrightcrest. There is no light or stop sign or left turn. The first sign you will see says "Welcome To Blair Hills". Then you will see a big Culver City sign. Turn right on Wrightcrest and go past two stop signs. After the second stop sign Wrightcrest becomes Shedd Terrace, just after you pass Blair Hills Park, on your left. As you go onto Shedd Terrace you will pass two houses then look for the Lauren Lane sign on your left (next to several mail boxes). Park as close to that sign as you can and then walk up Lauren Lane. Hal's house is all the way to the top of Lauren Lane, the last house on your left. If you have someone in your car who can't walk up the hill, you can drive up Lauren Lane and let them off and then go back and park on Shedd Terrace. We are planning on having a shuttle service at the corner of Shedd Terrace and Lauren Lane, to drive people who can't walk or would rather not walk up Lauren Lane to Hal's house. >From Eastside: Take Santa Monica Freeway (I-10), exit on Washington Blvd/Fairfax. At Washington Blvd (light at end of off ramp), turn left. Turn left at Fairfax (next light). When Fairfax deadens at La Cienega, turn left. Follow directions for From Westside above. >From South: Take San Diego Freeway north and exit on La Cienega. Take La Cienega for approx. 4 miles. Turn left on Rodeo Rd (after you passed Kenneth Hahn Park on your right). Stay in left lane. Turn left on first street (not into Cameo Woods condos) called Lenawee Ave. (there is no light or stop sign but you turn left before you reach overhead signs telling about Jefferson). Take Lenawee to first stop sign. Turn right on Ivy and follow curve up hill (turns left into Perham). At next stop sign, turn right on Wrightcrest. Eventually Wrightcrest turns into Shedd Terrace after you pass Blair Hills Park on your left. After road curves to right, look for the Lauren Lane sign on your left (next to several mail boxes). We actually live on Lauren Lane but our mailing address is Shedd Terrace.
