Vigil to End the Occupation of Iraq

We must prevent Iraq from becoming another Vietnam.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 28th, 5:00 PM to 6:45 PM

WHERE: Hill Street & 5th Street

                     Los Angeles, CA

On Wednesday, President Bush stated that the consequences of the US
withdrawal from Vietnam should be considered in deciding the future of
the US occupation of Iraq. Unfortunately, the fact that America's
prolonged involvement in Vietnam either created or exacerbated the human
suffering cited in the President's speech was overlooked. There are
indeed similarities between the Vietnam War and the ongoing US
occupation of Iraq, including: the excessive use of American firepower
resulting in thousands of civilian casualties, large-scale and lengthy
detentions of civilians, the use of torture, and the support of local
militias.

We must insist that the US not go further down the path that was pursued
in Vietnam and instead immediately end the occupation of Iraq and remove
all troops from that country.

To spread this message, on Tuesday night we will vigil at the corner of
5th and Hill Streets in Downtown Los Angeles.

We are joining others who will vigil all across America that day to
remember the human cost of the war and urge our members of Congress to
stand up in September and end the occupation of Iraq.

DIRECTIONS: Located on southeast corner of Hill Street and 5thStreet in
Downtown Los Angeles.
