Radical Women September Meeting Thursday, September 20, 6:30pm Special Video Showing: Salt of the Earth
This 1954 independent film depicts the real life struggle of Chicano miners and their wives for better working and living conditions. The only blacklisted movie in U.S. history, it portrays the miner’s demands for equality with during a 1950 strike against the Empire Zinc Co. With their husbands facing beatings and threats of jail for picketing, the brave miner’s wives challenged the mine owners (and their own husbands) to save the strike by keeping the picket lines going despite arrests. Salt of the Earth evokes the current battle of U.S. born and immigrant women workers fighting the racist harassment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Minutemen. Explore how women today can lead in building a multi-issue movement for full civil and labor rights for all working people. The program will include a tribute to Mexican Independence Day. A savory dinner buffet, with vegetarian option, served at 6:30pm available for $6.50 donation. The film begins at 7:00 pm. Solidarity Hall, 2170 W.
