"A gripping visualization of the unspeakable pain of war"
WHAT: The AFSC's acclaimed exhibit "EYES WIDE OPEN" and the touching
"Walk in their Shoes" display by CODEPINK: Women for Peace
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 22, 9am - 5pm
WHERE: Corner of Wilshire and Veteran, on the grounds of the Westwood
Federal Building
WHO: American Friends Service Committee and CODEPINK: Women for Peace
EYES WIDE OPEN is a display of combat boots memorializing the loss of
American servicepeople in Iraq. A pair of boots honors each military
casualty from Greater Los Angeles. This exhibit reminds viewers of the
need to work for peace. The exhibit consists of more than a hundred
pairs of shoes, lined up in rows and columns. Each pair represented the
life and death of an American soldier in Iraq.
And "Walk in their Shoes" uses civilian shoes to represent the Iraqi
lives cut short by the war that was "intended" to bring freedom to their
nation. This is a rare opportunity to see these powerful exhibits
together, sending the message that the human toll of the Iraq War is
mutual - and both sides are losing.
This exhibit is part of the Troops Out Now weeklong actions for peace in
Iraq.
The American Friends Service Committee is an international peace and
justice organization with a regional office in the downtown Los Angeles
area. Founded in 1917 and governed by the Society of Friends (Quakers),
its programs of peace, relief, reconciliation and development are based
on non-violence and belief in the inherent goodness of all persons. In
1947, AFSC accepted the Noble Peace Prize on behalf of all Quakers
