TAKE BACK OUR HISTORY Sunday, September 23, 2007
DEFEND THE HONOR CAMPAIGN A DAY OF REMEMBERANCE AND HONOR MEDIA & COMMUNITY ADVISORY Los Angeles, California Sunday September 23, 2007 from 3-4:30 P.M. on the public sidewalk in front of KCET Studios at 4401 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90027 tel: (323) 666-6500, the Defend the Honor Campaign AND Take Back Your History will have a press conference and pay tribute to the Mexican Americans, Latinos and Latinas of the WWII generation and protest the historical amnesia of public media in regards to the civil rights history of Chicanos and other Latinos. The event will protest the exclusion of the contributions of Mexican American and other Latinos from the documentary "The War" by Ken Burns, which airs on the same day. Burns with the support of PBS Television has maliciously excluded Mexican and other Latinos and touted the documentary as the true and official version of WWII. When challenged by the fact that over 500,000 Mexican, Latino & Latina Veterans were the most highly decorated U.S. ethnic group of World War II, Burns claimed that it was his artistic right to lie. But we also have the right to tell the truth and challenge why public funds were used to discriminate against us. We are not only concerned with being excluded from this film, but with history itself. Too often our history has been concealed or excluded and if we allow this current trend of exclusion to continue, we perhaps, may have no history at all. The erasure of history has fueled the racist nativism that has led to the building of a wall between the two countries forgetting that the border crossed us - not the other way around. The generation that fought in World War II furthered civil rights for all of us. They ended de jure segregation, opened opportunities in higher education and sought to give us equal protection under the law. This is a call to all supporters of truth and historical fairness in the including the contributions and sacrifices of all groups. It is not only Chicano, Mexicano and Latino & Latina WWII veterans and their families that are being disrespected by also Native Americans. Today if persons of Mexican extraction are excluded from the count less than one percent of Americans are natives. WHEN: Sunday, September 23, 2007 TIME: 3:00 -4:30 P.M.
