The School of the Americas (SOA), was renamed the
"Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation,"
in 2001. It is a combat training school for Latin American
soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia and paid for
by US tax payers. Initially established in Panama in
1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under
the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty.
The SOA, frequently dubbed the "School of Assassins,"
has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country
where its graduates have returned.
Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have
been tortured, raped, assassinated, "disappeared,"
massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained
at the School of Assassins. SOA Watch is an
independent organization that seeks to close the
US Army School of the Americas, under whatever
name it is called, through vigils and fasts, demonstrations
and nonviolent protest,as well as media and legislative work.
Whittier Area Peace and Justice Coalition is a program
of International Humanities Center, a nonprofit
organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code.

specific support of candidates or political parties).
Please bring your ideas, and be ready to step
up and participate.

Features a screening of the film
"/The Power of Nightmares, Part I
("Baby it's Cold Outside"),
a one-hour BBC documentary that originally aired in
2004 and may be one of the most important films
you will ever see. In this film, filmmaker Adam Curtis
compares the rise of the American Neo-Conservative
movement and the radical Islamist movement, noting
strong similarities between the two. More controversially,
it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a
massive, sinister organized force of destruction,
specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is in fact a
myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries-
and particularly American Neo-Conservatives-in an
attempt to unite and inspire their people following the
failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies.
"The Power of Nightmares" has been praised by film
critics in both Britain and the United States. Its message
and content have also been the subject of various
critiques and criticisms from conservatives and
progressives.
Join us as we view this film and engage in our always
lively and provocative follow-up discussion. The meeting
is free and refreshments are served.
