Dear Friends, If you have some time this afternoon (Tuesday, January 1st, 2008) starting around 3:00 PM, the Arlington West Memorial Volunteers can use your help to take down the Memorial. It has been up for three days. It is located just next to the Santa Monica Pier. Thank you to all of the people who have been making this Memorial in Santa Monica happen every Sunday since February of 2004. Arlington West has been seen by millions of people and is one of the most important Peace Actions happening in this country. The Arlington West Memorial was first started by the Veterans For Peace Chapter in Santa Barbara in November of 2003, with something like 250 crosses, each one representing an American soldier who has died in Iraq. The official government number is now over 3,900. That is a lot of crosses to put in the sand every Sunday. There is another sign at the memorial that says if we were to honor the Iraq people who have died in this war, we would have to cover the entire beach with crosses. This sign does recognize that as many as one million Iraqi's have died. People who happen to see the memorial are deeply effected, no matter what their position on the war has been. If you can't make it today, please go next Sunday or on any Sunday, so you can experience what it is like being there. Your help is always appreciated, either in putting the memorial up around 7:00 AM or in putting it away (under the pier), starting an hour or so before sunset. This is a very big job - but one that is so very important and reaches so many people from all over the world.
I also want to say thanks to everyone who made it to the Rose Parade today to be part of the White Rose Coalition, protesting the war in Iraq and asking for Bush and Cheney to be Impeached.
