WHAT: STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY: A GRAPHIC HISTORY WHEN: January 22 February 29 Reminiscence and Reflections on SDS, Sunday, February 3 at 2 pm WHERE: Workmens Circle, 1525 S. Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY: A GRAPHIC HISTORY Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) was one of the great radical organizations spawned in the turbulence of the 1960s anti-war movement. Groups like SDS were a testament to the strength of grassroots organizing. Their activism rapidly spread across hundreds of college campuses across the nation, and off-campus chapters sprang up as well. The Yippies were but one of the organizations that emerged out of SDS. SDS itself was related to the youth radicalism of the Civil Rights movement. For his new SDS history, editor and noted historian/author Paul Buhle (Wobblies: A Graphic History) worked with legendary underground comic writer Harvey Pekar, author of the autobiographical comic book series American Splendor and subject of, as well as actor in, the Academy Award-nominated film American Splendor (2003). For illustrations, Buhle chose underground artist Gary Dumm. Guest writers authored some segments of the book as well, including singer/songwriter John Pietaro on Phil Ochs, and Eric Gordon on early gay and lesbian stirrings in SDS. Included are two paintings by John Johnson (Change Links editor) At press time, confirmed panelists for Sunday, February 3 at 2 pm include John Johnson, Vivian Rothstein, Paul Von Blum, and Eric Gordon. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Gallery. There is no admission charge. A Shenere Velt means a more beautiful world in Yiddish.
